He Had 27 Missed Calls From the President | Joe Mucheru Thought It Was a Scam Caller.

What does it take to wire a nation? One man's father started as a caddie carrying someone else's golf clubs. That man went on to put Google on African soil, became Kenya's tech minister, and has now moved $11 billion into the pockets of people banks forgot about. This is the story of Joe Mucheru — the invisible architect behind the internet you're using right now. He pitched Google to buy WhatsApp before Facebook did (they didn't — and publicly apologised). He mapped a continent that showed a highway running through State House. He smoked out 400,000 ghost children and 5,000 ghost police from the government payroll. And he's now building a savannah golf course in Chaka with his father's name on the gate. This is a conversation about infrastructure, legacy, and the stubborn belief that Africa deserves a seat at the table it built. The Only Emergency is a C-Section! | Mbuvi Ngunze on Fires, Boardrooms, and Why He's Not Done Yet

Mbuvi Ngunze has sat in both seats: the one that makes the call, and the one that knows when to challenge it. In this episode of The Nitpicker Podcast, he walks us through the August 2013 JKIA fire — the crisis that tested every muscle of preparedness he'd built — and then takes us inside the boardroom: the CEO-Chair relationship, the characters around a board table, and why the only emergency in the world is a C-section. From growing up in a home that produced two corporate leaders, to becoming CFO of Bamburi at 31, to running internal communications across 80,000 staff at Lafarge in France, to leading Kenya Airways through one of its most visible crises — Mbuvi's career has been about building and consolidating, not founding. We also get into why he took an eight-year break from corporate life, why "retirement" is the wrong word for today's over-50s, and why that saxophone is still in the box. "If I Don't Do It Now, I Never Will" - Ritesh Doshi Bet On Himself And It Keeps Paying Off!

Ritesh Doshi didn't plan to build a coffee empire. After investment banking across three continents and running Nairobi's first food delivery startup (Naked Pizza, later sold to Pizza Hut), he took nearly two years off to figure out what he wanted and ended up buying his local neighbourhood coffee shop. Spring Valley Coffee now has 10 cafes in Nairobi, one in London, and over 250 hospitality partners worldwide. But the story behind it is about more than coffee.  We get into:  Why a $22.50 bag of Kenyan coffee in Brooklyn — where the farmer got less than 9% — became the business thesis  What burnout really feels like, and the one question that snapped him out of it  How his grandmother's biscuit recipe and his mother's hospitality ended up in the business  Sharon: the staff cook who taught herself to roast by peering over the roaster's shoulder  Why Spring Valley has no loyalty program, no sales team, and no paid media — and doesn't need them  Keeping a soul inside a 126-person, two-country operation  Ritesh is building a business on three rules: do the right thing, make incredible coffee, delight everyone. Simple on paper, rare in practice. This one will stay with you.    Credits:   Gab Master (AKA The Host) - Carol Musyoka   Ball Juggler (AKA The Producer) - Kui Njoroge  Whip Cracker (AKA The Director) - Kui Njoroge   Kissungu Mingi (AKA Script Writer)- Zawadi Njeru & Kui Njoroge  Lights, Camera, Action – Snapnest Photography   Motion Graphics - Nyambura Irungu   The Big Kahuna (AKA Executive Producer) - Carol Musyoka     The Nitpicker Podcast – A Ficus Tree Production.    The views and opinions expressed by the guests are their own and do not necessarily reflect those of The Nitpicker Podcast or its affiliates. Primitive or Powerful? A Journey from Colonial Names to African Roots!

"The more British we become, the more we deny who we are." In this episode of The Nitpicker Podcast, we sit down with the incredible Dr Wanjiru Kamau—a counselling psychologist, socio-activist, and "granary of wisdom" who, at 85 years old, is still eating sugarcane with her own teeth and challenging everything we thought we knew about being "civilised". Dr Wanjiru takes us through her fascinating life journey, from the 1960 Tom Mboya airlift to Oregon, to her realisation that her "Christian" name, Josephine, belonged to Napoleon’s wife, not to her. She shares the shocking story of being asked to pay 25,000 Kenya shillings just to reclaim her African name on her passport and explains why she spent a lifetime "killing" the Josephine identity. We dive deep into her groundbreaking PhD research, "A Tapestry of Menopause Among Traditional Agikuyu Women." Dr Wanjiru breaks the silence on topics often hidden in Kenyan homes—bodies, sex, and the transitions of womanhood. She challenges the Western medical view of menopause as an "estrogen deficiency disease," instead offering the forgotten wisdom of her "co-researchers"—traditional women who taught her how to listen to her body and the power of fermented, natural foods. About the Guest: Dr Wanjiru Kamau is a wife, a mother of four, a grandmother of eight, and a professional counselling psychologist. She is a fierce advocate for seed sovereignty, cultural identity, and the celebration of African life transitions. You Can Know the Law and Still Be Surprised | Chacha Odera on Why the Law Is Never the Whole Story

"Maternity is a fact. Paternity is faith."    That's how Chacha Odera opened. And it only got deeper from there.  With nearly four decades in practice, Chacha Odera has sat across the table from people at their worst — fighting over children, estates, and identities. He's watched families unravel in courtrooms. He's seen laws lag behind the very lives they're meant to govern.    In this conversation, we talk about what the law really says when paternity is questioned, why a man can be legally bound to a child he didn't father, what happens to your estate when no one knows where your will is, and what 38 years in a courtroom teaches you about people.    He is, as one colleague put it, "an extremely able advocate and a gentleman in all manner of the word."    This is Chacha Odera.  -- Credits:   Gab Master (AKA The Host) - Carol Musyoka   Ball Juggler (AKA The Producer) - Kui Njoroge  Whip Cracker (AKA The Director) - Kui Njoroge   Kissungu Mingi (AKA Script Writer)- Zawadi Njeru & Kui Njoroge  Lights, Camera, Action – Snapnest Photography   Motion Graphics - Nyambura Irungu   The Big Kahuna (AKA Executive Producer) - Carol Musyoka     The Nitpicker Podcast – A Ficus Tree Production.    The views and opinions expressed by the guests are their own and do not necessarily reflect those of The Nitpicker Podcast or its affiliates. Captain CB Kariuki on Coups, Cockpits, and Not Complicating Life

Captain CB reflects on what really qualifies someone for the captain’s seat: progression through a strict seniority system, consistent conduct and performance, and the opportunities created (or limited) by fleet growth. He recounts his unlikely entry into flying via Air Force recruitment, jet training abroad, and how the 1982 coup attempt reshaped both careers and culture in the service through fear, detention, and vetting. Transitioning to Kenya Airways, he describes the tradeoffs of stepping out of the cockpit to run cargo relief operations during the Rwanda crisis, then returning with lost seniority but a broader perspective. Kariuki also demystifies commercial aviation for passengers—simulator training, difficult airports, autoland capabilities, cockpit security procedures, and why disruptions often stem from human behaviour, before closing with a simple leadership ethos: stay disciplined, think ahead, and don’t overcomplicate life. Teddy Muthusi | Why Am I THAT Guy Who Blessings Keep Chasing?

Teddy Muthusi on Creativity, Chaos, and Choosing Help Teddy Muthusi, forever the guy who reads “KEEP OFF THE GRASS” and immediately tests the lawn, traces how a rebellious, theatre-leaning kid grew into a celebrated creative and radio personality, then how the same wired-differently energy slid into partying, substances, burnout, paranoia, and the hard reality of bipolar disorder (and later an ADHD diagnosis). He punctures the myth that drugs or manic highs make better ideas, describing, instead, the cost: lost jobs, lost money, strained relationships, and moments that nearly ended everything. What pulls him through is a mix of rehab, the right meds and doctor, therapy, brutal self-honesty, supportive colleagues and family, and daily accountability—plus a stubborn refusal to stop. His blunt takeaway for anyone spiralling: stop telling yourself “I’ve got this,” and get help.
