No Matter: A Brand Design Critique Podcast

Kaleb Dean

Welcome to No Matter, a brand design critique podcast of little consequence, by two experts. Nothing we say here will change a logo, but how we talk about design does matter. In each episode, host Kaleb Dean and a fellow designer look at one rebrand: what works, what doesn't, and what's really at stake, financially, socially, and culturally. Our modality is to critique the work, not the people. We examine each rebrand with a keen eye and an open heart, uncovering the story behind it, decoding the design choices, and asking what they mean for the brand's identity. From global corporations to local businesses, no rebrand is too big or too small, as long as there's something at stake beyond revenue. Expect candid conversation, expert insight, and a dash of humor, with the goal of modeling positive critique for the design world and every area of life that warrants it. Whether you're a designer, a business owner, or just curious about branding, follow No Matter wherever you listen to podcasts, and watch the video version on YouTube to see the designs as we discuss them. Cash App's Evergreen Brand System: Selling the Keychain, Not the Keys

Cash App's new brand system isn't a logo rebrand, but instead rebuilds everything around it: gummy 3D sneakers, boba tea, a graffitied column, and a plastic lock you'd never trust with your front door. In this episode of No Matter, Kaleb sits down with designer Miles Seiden to unpack the 'Evergreen' design system agency BUCK built with Cash App's in-house team, and speculate on what it says about how a new generation spends, shares, and talks about money. In this episode: → Why banking branding is moving from buildings to objects → Neon green in an industry that invented corporate blue → Showing the keychain, not the keys: micro-purchases as brand strategy → Boba, sushi and why getting specific beats speaking to everyone → Choosing a bank by its branch vs. choosing an app by its world → A generic name and a dollar sign, carried by a very specific system From a 3D lighting rig worthy of a sneaker studio to accent colors that don't scream 'bank', this system reads like a portrait of its users' habits. Whether you're a designer, brand strategist, or fintech founder, this conversation explores what happens when a financial brand stops trying to look like a pillar of trust. Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Building Conservancy Rebrand: When the Logo Should Disappear

The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy just unveiled a new identity, and the most interesting thing about it? The logo seems designed to get out of the way. In this episode of No Matter, Kaleb sits down with Miles Seiden to unpack a rebrand that challenges what we think we know about brand presence. In this episode:→ Why a "disappearing" logo might be the smartest brand move→ When grid systems need to bend, break, and reflect→ The tension between anonymity and identity in heritage brands→ What muted palettes and retro type specimens say about honoring legacy→ Why some brands put their content ahead of the identity itself From art deco-inspired type to muted color and a questionable logo, this rebrand shows that sometimes the best brand design knows when to step back. We even change our minds during the conversation, because that's what good critique should do. Whether you're a designer, brand strategist, or architecture enthusiast, this conversation explores how identity can serve a legacy without overpowering it. The Utah 2034 Winter Olympic Games Logo: Critique and Thoughts

Is it bold? Alien? Premature? Or the start of something much bigger? In this episode of No Matter, Kaleb is joined by designer Miles Seiden to unpack the newly released Utah 2034 Olympic identity: what's working, what feels unresolved, and why Olympic branding might be one of the hardest design challenges on the planet. We dig into the logo, the rollout, the backlash, and the question behind it all: where's the system? In this episode:→ Why the Utah 2034 logo stopped our scroll, but left us conflicted→ The risks of launching a logo without a visible identity system→ Legibility vs. readability in wayfinding and global events→ Committee-driven design, and what it does to bold ideas→ How Olympic branding differs from commercial brand work→ Why "wait and see" might be the only honest take right now From modular typography and alien aesthetics to the sheer scale of Olympic design systems, this conversation goes beyond hot takes into the reality of designing for the entire world, where what's at stake is cultural as much as visual. Domino's Brand Refresh 2025: Updating a Leading Brand

Domino's quietly dropped one of the best brand updates of the year: a masterclass in how refreshed design meets logistics. In this episode of No Matter, Kaleb is joined by designer Miles Seiden to unpack Domino's 2025 identity refresh.  Among a few laughs, we talk about:→ Why Domino's sees itself as a tech company that happens to sell pizza→ How sonic branding and the Domino's tracker experience build customer trust→ What the new typography says about the future of digital-first food brands→ Why this refresh outpaces Pizza Hut and Little Caesars in clarity and execution From its bold (but perhaps reused) packaging to its shift toward brighter, screen-native colors, Domino's shows what happens when brand systems, UX, and culture all align. Whether you're a designer, strategist, or founder, this one is packed with lessons on turning brand systems into business systems. AirBnb UI / Brand Update 2025: The Business of Design

Airbnb just dropped a major visual update, and no, it's not a rebrand. But it is a masterclass in how design, UI, and business strategy can align without changing a logo or typeface. In this episode of No Matter, Kaleb is joined by Tom Declat of Visionary Grid to talk through the Airbnb Summer Update. In this episode:→ Why skeuomorphic 3D icons are making a comeback→ How Airbnb is turning its app into a full travel ecosystem→ What it means to design for the journey, not just the booking→ Why this kind of design thinking is quietly tripling their business potential From Pixar-style icons to the UX strategy underneath, this isn't just a refresh. It's a rethinking of what a brand experience should be in 2025, and what's at stake when a brand bets its business on design. Whether you're a designer, strategist, or founder, there's a lot to learn from how Airbnb turned design into business growth. Prefer to read? OpenAI's Brand Refresh: When AI Companies Hire Human Designers

In this episode of No Matter, Kaleb and Yolanda dive into OpenAI's recent brand refresh. We unpack the visual evolution of the company behind ChatGPT: the sleek typography (Dinamo?), the minimalist aesthetic, and the animations created by high-profile design agencies, or more importantly, by humans. At the heart of this one is a contradiction. We agree the visual execution is beautiful, but we ask why a company building AI that can generate designs would turn to human designers for its own identity. That leads to a bigger conversation about the limits of current AI design tools, and what's at stake when AI companies present work their own tools couldn't create. Yolanda shares her firsthand experience trying to use ChatGPT for design work, and Kaleb adds context on the agencies involved and the conceptual disconnect he sees. We also break down the brand's key visual elements, from typography and motion to its world-centric imagery, and debate whether this refresh truly represents what OpenAI does. Plus, a live experiment: can AI rebrand itself? No Matter is a brand design critique podcast of little consequence, by two experts. From British Luxury to Miami Pink: Decoding Jaguar's Rebrand

In the first episode of No Matter, Kaleb Dean and Yolanda Sinaga dig into Jaguar's controversial 2024 rebrand. The conversation unfolds in two parts, before and after the December 2nd full brand reveal, so you hear how first reactions held up against the final outcome. We look at Jaguar's dramatic shift away from traditional luxury positioning, the disappearance of the iconic leaping jaguar, and the arrival of a striking "Miami Pink" colorway. We also explore what's at stake in Jaguar's move toward electric vehicles by 2025, and whether this rebrand positions the company for a new audience. The conversation takes an unexpected turn when we uncover possible connections between Jaguar's parent company, Tata Motors, Lionel Messi, and Inter Miami. Along the way, we critique the typography (which we compare to Beats by Dre), the creative direction, and the disconnect between the teaser campaign and the final reveal. We both appreciate the logotype and the new vehicles, but we raise real questions about brand authenticity and how the campaign was executed. Whether you're a designer, a car lover, or curious how legacy brands navigate big transitions, this episode takes a close look at one of the most talked-about rebrands of 2024.
