God and Me

Drawing from Psalm 139 verses 1 through 12, this sermon explores what it means to be fully and intimately known by God. The pastor opens with the universal human tendency to manage appearances and hide our true selves, tracing this impulse back to the fall of Adam and Eve in Genesis 3. Against this backdrop, Psalm 139 is presented as the prayer of someone who has stopped hiding. The covenant God, Yahweh, is shown to know His people completely -- their sitting and rising, their unspoken words, their thoughts before they form, their paths, and their hiding places. The sermon holds in tension the unsettling and comforting dimensions of this knowledge, ultimately pointing to the God who does not merely observe from a distance but leads, holds, and remains present in every circumstance. The sermon concludes by directing listeners to Jesus, the great high priest who sympathizes with human weakness, as the one to whom we should run rather than hide.

Be Still, and Know

Drawing from Psalm 46, this sermon calls believers to find their refuge, strength, and peace in God alone, even as the world around them churns with chaos, fear, and uncertainty. The preacher walks through the psalm to show that God is not a distant observer but a very present help in times of trouble, one who dwells intimately among His people and fights on their behalf. The focal point of the message is verse 10, where the command "Be still and know that I am God" is understood not merely as a personal devotional posture but as a declaration spoken against the forces of chaos and fear, inviting believers into an intimate, trusting knowledge of who God is. The sermon affirms that God has not been dethroned, is not asleep, and is actively at work even when He cannot be felt or seen. Believers are called to resist fear, trust in God's sovereign power, and exalt Him in their hearts, families, and church.

Why Celebrate?

Drawing from Luke 15 and its three parables, this sermon explores the nature of celebration as rooted in the character and joy of God. The preacher establishes that the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son are not primarily about what is lost, but about the one who does the searching -- the shepherd, the woman, and the father -- all of whom represent God. To be lost is to be outside the household, protection, and authority of the owner; to be found is to be restored to that place. The Father's response to restoration is one of excessive, overflowing joy that spills out into celebration with others. Jesus tells these parables in response to the Pharisees' complaint about his eating with sinners, reframing the question: these are not merely sinners, they are lost -- even dead -- and the Father's passion to restore them explains and justifies Christ's actions. The sermon further examines the older son as a warning against self-focus in the midst of the Father's celebration, and closes with a call to join in the joy of God as a practice of relationship, anticipating the ultimate wedding feast described in Revelation.

Such As These: Receiving the Kingdom with Empty Hands

Drawing from Mark chapter 10, verses 13 through 16, the sermon explores what it means to receive the kingdom of God with the openness and vulnerability of a child. Preached on a Thanksgiving Sunday during a child dedication service, the message centers on the truth that God's grace cannot be earned through merit or reputation but must be received with empty hands. Jesus, who rebuked his disciples for hindering children from coming to him, models a God who is not distant or aloof but who draws near, touches, and blesses those who come to him with nothing to offer. The sermon calls parents, grandparents, and the entire congregation to persistent prayer for their children and challenges every listener to examine whether they are coming to Christ with open hands or clutching a resume of self-righteousness.

Why Did Jesus Come? (Part 2)

This sermon continues a series examining four reasons Jesus gave in the Gospel of John for why he came from heaven to earth. The pastor reviews two previously covered purposes — that Jesus was sent by the Father to save the world rather than condemn it, and that he came to give eternal life — before introducing two new purposes. The third purpose is that Jesus came to present the standard by which the world will be judged, illustrated through the healing of a man born blind and the contrasting responses of faith and hardened unbelief. The fourth purpose, revealed during Jesus' trial before Pontius Pilate, is that he came to testify to the truth. The sermon draws a sharp contrast between the world's shifting, relativistic view of truth and the absolute truth Jesus embodies and proclaims. It closes with a call to decision: will we submit to Jesus and his words, or will we insist on our own way?

Why Did Jesus Come? (Part 1)

Drawing from four key statements in the Gospel of John where Jesus declares his purpose for being sent into the world, this sermon explores why Jesus came to earth two thousand years ago rather than coming as a conquering king to immediately eradicate evil. The pastor begins by anchoring the message in Isaiah 64, which captures the tension between longing for God to intervene in a broken world and recognizing human sinfulness. The sermon addresses the honest question of why the world still contains so much evil if Jesus truly came as Savior, explaining that Jesus came first not to judge but to save, with judgment reserved for a future time. The message unpacks how sin fundamentally severs humanity's relationship with God, why that broken relationship cannot simply be declared forgiven without satisfying divine justice, and how God demonstrated both his justice and his compassion by sending his Son to enter into human suffering and pay sin's penalty. The sermon also emphasizes that salvation carries an ongoing purpose: believers are commissioned to join Christ in his redemptive work, equipped by the Holy Spirit, and are already seated with Christ in the heavenly realm even while living on earth.

Part 2 — Imitating His Prayer Life

This sermon, the second in a two-part series, examines the prayer life of Jesus Christ as both a model to emulate and a set of commands to obey. The preacher draws from multiple Gospel accounts to paint a comprehensive picture of how the God-man approached prayer — with raw honesty, consistent prioritization, humble submission, persistent intercession for others, and heartfelt worship. The sermon moves between observing what Jesus did in prayer and listening to what He instructed His disciples to do, presenting prayer not as a religious formality but as the very breath of the Christian life. The congregation is called to bring their whole, unpolished selves before God, to submit their wills to His, and to pray with the confidence that God hears each of them by name.

Part 1: The Man Who Prayed

Continuing a series on prayer rooted in James 5, this sermon shifts focus from Elijah as an example of righteous prayer to Jesus Christ as the supreme example. The pastor grounds the sermon in Philippians 2, establishing that Jesus is truly God and truly man, and that this dual nature makes Him both the perfect Savior and the perfect model for prayer. Because Christ took on full humanity, He experienced genuine hunger, temptation, grief, and compassion, making Him a sympathetic high priest who intercedes for believers before the Father. The call to the congregation is to imitate the humility, selflessness, and dependent prayer life of Jesus, not as an unattainable ideal, but as a real and accessible example, because He was, like Elijah, truly a man.
