    CHAMPION OF HER SEX

“Independence is happiness.” - Susan B. Anthony Susan B. Anthony was an American writer, lecturer, and abolitionist who was a leading figure in the women’s voting rights movement. The work of Anthony and other suffragists eventually lead to the passage of the 19th Amendment, granting all women the right to vote, in 1920. Susan B. Anthony was arrested, tried, and fined $100 after illegally voting in the 1872 presidential election in Rochester, New York, using the Fourteenth Amendment as her legal argument. She refused to pay the fine. In February 1896 Nellie Bly interviewed a 75-year-old Susan B. Anthony for the newspaper The World in an article titled “Champion Of Her Sex: Miss Susan B. Anthony”. Bly captured a rare, personal side of Anthony, discussing her history, her views on women’s rights, and even humorous personal questions. You can read the full interview on our website: Axel Press. The Ebony Frame

Edith Nesbit was an English author and poet who is best remembered for inventing the modern children’s adventure story, blending realistic everyday child experiences with magic and fantasy. Her stories broke away from overly moralistic Victorian children’s books by showing children as they truly are—mischievous, independent, and imaginative. Edith Nesbit has a second, darker reputation as the writer of some of the English language’s most powerful supernatural horror. “The Ebony Frame” is her Gothic horror and supernatural short story, first published in Longman’s Magazine in October 1891 and later collected in her 1893 anthology Grim Tales. Known for her bohemian lifestyle, she cut her hair short, smoked in public, and raised her husband’s illegitimate children by her best friend as her own. Despite writing about strong female characters, she notably opposed women’s suffrage. Edith Nesbit died of lung cancer (linked to her status as a lifelong heavy smoker) on May 4, 1924, at the age of 65. Daddy-Long-Legs

“It isn’t the big troubles in life that require character. Anybody can rise to a crisis and face a crushing tragedy with courage, but to meet the petty hazards of the day with a laugh—I really think that requires spirit.” -Judy Abbott When Jerusha Abbott, an eighteen-year-old girl living in an orphan asylum, was told that a mysterious millionaire had agreed to pay for her education, and give her a monthly allowance, it was like a dream come true. He has spoken to her former teachers and thinks she has potential to become an excellent writer. Jerusha for the first time in her life had someone she could pretend was “family.” But everything was not perfect, for he chose to remain anonymous and asked that she write him every month about her progress in school, without expecting any correspondence in return. Who was this mysterious gentleman and would Jerusha ever meet him? ‘Daddy-Long-Legs’ is a 1912 novel by the American writer Jean Webster, and it will be available in our bookshop as a paperback and an audiobook in December. The Diaries of Adam & Eve

Welcome to our new podcast Just One Chapter. Our goal is in every episode to introduce you to one chapter of the selected book, plus give you some information about the mentioned book. Since it seems like everyone’s attention span is getting shorter and shorter every day, we have decided to keep it nice and short — under 10 minutes per episode. Let’s start with the most hilarious, charming, and entertaining of Mark Twain’s later writing. THE DIARIES OF ADAM AND EVE collects in one volume “Extracts from Adam’s Diary,” first published in 1904, and “Eve’s Diary,” published in 1906 after Olivia Clemens’s death. Ultimately an endearing love story, the diaries record the couple’s initial ambivalence toward each other. While Adam observes that Eve “has such a rage for explaining,” she muses, “He talks very little. Perhaps it is because he is not bright.” Thanks for listening to our podcast!
