The Real Cost of Return Mail (And How to Fix It) | Episode 2 of Beyond The Envelope

Your 81¢ letter actually costs your business $2.81. In this episode, we show you exactly where the other $2 goes. Kevin and Steve Diamond walk through a real mail-cost breakdown, line by line, for a typical business sending 750 pieces a month. Postage is just the start. You’ll see the meter lease, the fees you pay just to add postage to your meter, ink that costs up to 37 times more on small machines, and the hours your highest-paid people spend folding and stuffing envelopes. Then we get into what returned mail really costs (about $15 a piece, according to studies at large companies) and a postage refund most businesses don’t know about: when postage is misprinted or never mailed, you can often get most of it back. The True Cost of Sending Mail (It's Not Just a Stamp) | Episode 1 of Beyond The Envelope

Your stamp says 78¢. For most small businesses, that letter really costs closer to $3, and almost nobody adds it up. In the first episode of Beyond the Envelope, father and son Kevin and Steve Diamond bring 70 years of combined mail-industry experience to one question: why do small and mid-sized businesses pay so much more to send mail than big companies do, and what can they do about it? Kevin spent 44 years in the mailing business, from selling postage meters at 20 to running a dealership that served five states. Steve has spent 26 years in the industry, from small mailing machines to million-dollar enterprise automation deals. Together they’re building Cxnch to bring big-company mail tools to everyone else. In this episode: - Why the postage on your envelope is the smallest part of what you’re paying - The hidden costs most businesses never add up: equipment, ink, labor, returned mail and certified mail - How mail changed for big companies over the last 40 years, and why it barely changed for everyone else - The real story of an invoice that went to the wrong customer, and what it cost - Why tracking your mail, checking addresses and doing certified mail in one click are no longer just for big companies What’s your mail really costing you?
