    Silence: Episode One

    The morning Grace runs away from her mother, the voice in her earphones is talking about forgiveness. It's harmattan season in Accra, two days before Grace's seventeenth birthday, and last night her mother slapped her in the one room that still feels like her late father. Grace rides to the sea to breathe. Her grandmother calls with plans for a Christmas birthday party at the family house in Aburi, and a cold feeling Grace can't explain rises in her chest. Back home, she finds her mother on the floor. A desperate trip to the pharmacy ends in a collision with Ekow, a sharp-tongued new boy from America who knows far too much about the medicine she is trying to buy. By nightfall, her mother is asking for the one thing Grace isn't sure she can give. Listener note: this episode includes parental alcohol abuse, a moment of physical violence between a mother and daughter, and grief.
