The Human Song Through Time

Chayton Alo

The Human Song Through Time is an epic and historic journey through the history, reality, and experience of humanity on Planet Earth through the lens of music & musicology. A generation's popular music emerges from how humans physically live and work together -- density, mobility, architecture, labor rhythms and ecological pressures. Humanity requires communication to create collective settlement and that social structure creates music structure. This podcast will explore the human ecology, psychology and evolution of musical expression for communication, work, reproduction, theology, government propaganda, historical continuity and purely for entertainment. Is music a basic human need? Do the 3 human beats (heart, lung, steps) imply the human being are born musical? How has human settlement from hunter-gatherers to city dwellers transformed the nature of musical instruments and therefore music itself. And, is there a trophic system of music in which social structure creates music which alters the future structure of human beliefs and settlements. The Human Song Through Time will present both a spatial and temporal journey through the centuries and across the globe to discover how, why and what is music. And, how profoundly music has been a catalyst for human connection, historical transmission, and revolutionary change over the millenia.
