Book Overview: Kinky & Complicated is for everyone living with a mental illness or neurodivergene and trying to navigate intimate relationships. Mental health conditions and neurodivergence change how people show up in relationships. Atypical brains process information, emotions, and desires differently than is modeled in most relationship advice books. This book is for everyone who lives with or loves someone with an atypical brain. The book provides a researched-based overview of how various mental health conditions and neurodivergence change the way people understand and interact with the world. This information helps individuals understand that they are not the issue- they are just living in a world not designed for them. It then covers how these differences show up in our relationships. The book covers the complexities of consent when someone lives with a mental illness or neurodivergence. It also covers how consent changes as conditions change over time. It has a chapter about common myths around kink and and mental health. The belief that kink is a healing and can replace traditional treatments, the desire to sublimate self-harm with kink activities, and other common ideas are explained in detail. Finally, the book provides dozens of tools to help people develop the langauge and skills to communicate about the insivible aspects of your illness. It provides worksheets to help plan for changes in mental health conditions and make plans for when you lack ability to clearly communicate about your needs and desires. It also offers several tools to help navigate the health care system. What the Critics are Saying:Kinky and Complicated: Navigating BDSM with Mental Illness or Neurodivergence is an invaluable resource for folks with "neurospicy brains" and/or a brain with a mental health issue, and their partners, as they navigate BDSM. The Narrators: Val Violet (Ze/Hir, She/Her) is a leather educator, event organizer, and leatherworker based in Seattle, WA. She is a white, butch, trans woman leatherdyke, a disabled, Covid-competent mobility aid user and a Dominant sadist. chastity vale (she/her) is a white leatherdyke, a submissive, a trans woman, a dyke and a f****t. she is an artist working mostly in interactive fiction and video art, a writer, and a leather archivist and historian. her research has focused on trans women, inclusivity in leather, and submission. Both run the T Slur Collective: a Seattle-based duo of leather historians, archivists, and educators and a butch/femme leatherdyke couple. Both are trans women, and their experiences as trans women in the leather scene play a big role in their work. Part 1 Recap: We ended the last episode talking about disability as a political identity, where Val discusses how disabled people are largely ignored and that puts disabled people in the position where they have to be political. Chastity shared that the history of disabled people is not often archived or included and part of that is the lack of care from the state; it wasn’t until the Capital Crawl on March 12th 1990 that the ADA was passed.
