The AI Harness: Unlocking High-Performance Analytics and Sovereign AI for Capital Markets

Episode Summary As AI Enterprise Sovereignty moves from a policy debate to a top C-suite priority, Capital Markets institutions face a critical challenge: connecting decades of data infrastructure with AI investments without leaking proprietary IP, losing their competitive edge, or incurring escalating token costs with frontier model providers. In this inaugural episode, guest host Usama Fayyad sits down with Farhang Mehregani (CEO, Engine AI) and Ashok Reddy (CEO, KX) to discuss why generic LLMs struggle with time-series data and statefulness, how to de-risk AI adoption using deterministic evaluation benchmarks (evals), and how an Enterprise AI Harness allows firms to control their data stack, save money, and build production-ready front-office solutions in weeks. Key Takeaways Sovereignty Starts Where Data Lives: AI sovereignty in Capital Markets is not merely about models; it is about retaining total control over your data stack, proprietary knowledge, and operational IP.The 80/80/20 Rule of Workloads: Over 80% of Capital Markets workloads do not require AI at runtime once established. Of the remaining 20% that do require AI, 80% can be handled efficiently by open-source models, reserving frontier LLMs for less than 10% of highly complex, novel queries.Temporal Integrity & Bitemporal Data: General-purpose AI platforms lack inherent time awareness and state tracking. Capital Markets decisions depend on bitemporal precision and temporal integrity to prevent lookahead bias in trading models. The Power of the AI Harness: An AI Harness serves as the connective layer between existing data platforms and model estates, offering guardrails, lineage, governance, and cost control without platform lock-in.Rapid Deployment & Value Focus: Rather than spending months on open-ended pilots or accumulating token costs, firms can achieve production-ready, front-office outcomes in 2 to 6 weeks by targeting specific daily desk workflows and prioritising measurable business value over token usage. About the Speakers Dr. Usama Fayyad Usama M. Fayyad is Chairman of Open Insights, an AI and data technology and consulting firm he founded in 2008 after leaving Yahoo! to help enterprises deploy data-driven solutions and grow revenue from AI and data assets. He is also SVP for AI & Data Strategy, Sr. Advisor to the President, and the Inaugural Director of the Institute for Experiential AI at Northeastern University, where he serves as a Professor of the Practice at the Khoury College of Computer Sciences. Usama became the first person to hold the Chief Data Officer title when Yahoo! acquired his second startup after he left Microsoft. As Yahoo!’s CDO & EVP of Strategic Data Solutions, he also founded and led Yahoo Research Labs, building it into one of the top research institutions focused on the sciences underlying the Internet. Fayyad’s previous roles include Global Chief Data Officer at Barclays Bank, where he also served as CIO of Finance, Risk, & Treasury Technology. He is the Founding Executive Chairman of Oasis500, an early-stage technology accelerator in the Middle East. He served as co-founder & CTO of OODA Health, held leadership roles at Microsoft, and founded the Machine Learning Systems group at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where his work on machine learning garnered him the top Excellence in Research award from Caltech and a U.S. Government medal from NASA. Fayyad earned his Ph.D. in engineering in AI/Machine Learning from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and holds two Bachelor of Science in Engineering degrees (Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering), an MSE in Computer Engineering, and an M.Sc. in Mathematics. He has published over 100 technical articles on data mining, data science, AI/ML, and databases. He holds over 20 patents and is a Fellow of both the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Additionally, he has edited two influential books on data mining and data science and served as Founding Editor-in-Chief for two key journals in the field. Farhang Mehregani Farhang Mehregani is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Engine AI, the Intelligence Engine for Capital Markets. Farhang leads the firm in delivering actionable, real-time decision intelligence to front-office teams operating across complex Capital Markets environments. Farhang brings extensive experience across institutional investing, risk management, and enterprise technology innovation. Following a 16-year career in senior investing and risk roles at Citi, he co-founded Silver Ridge Asset Management, where he led the creation of an in-house AI and machine learning platform. His track record of pioneering enterprise technology, including driving Citi’s early adoption of Palantir in 2008, led him to launch Engine AI in 2019. Farhang holds a BSc in Economics and Finance from the Wharton School. Ashok Reddy Ashok Reddy is Chief Executive Officer of KX, a high performance data and AI company built for the world's most demanding real-time environments. Ashok leads KX at a defining moment for enterprise AI, as organisations move from experimentation to production and discover that the next frontier is not only better models, but better data, context, timing, and trust. He is focused on establishing KX as the leader in temporal AI: deterministic, time-aware infrastructure for regulated and data-intensive industries where every decision must be fast, auditable, reproducible, and explainable. KX powers mission-critical systems across Capital Markets, aerospace and defence, semiconductor manufacturing, and other industries where speed, scale, precision, and trust are non-negotiable. Under Ashok's leadership, KX is helping enterprises move beyond historical analytics toward real-time intelligence and decision-making at scale. Ashok is a multi-time enterprise software category builder with more than 25 years of experience leading global technology businesses. Before joining KX, he served as CEO of Digital.ai and as Group General Manager at Broadcom and CA Technologies. Earlier in his career at IBM and Rational Software, he helped shape major enterprise software categories including DevOps, software engineering, and application lifecycle management. He holds an MS in Computer Science from Georgia Tech with a focus on AI and machine learning, and is a named inventor on multiple patents. Featured Quotes "Sovereignty for Capital Markets means control and interoperability over your data and AI stack. The benefit is protecting your IP while achieving faster, more accurate results and saving significant money in the process." — Farhang Mehregani, CEO of Engine AI "Sovereignty starts with where the data lives. What differentiates a firm is their own data and knowledge. You don't want to rent that, and you certainly don't want to use it to train external models." — Ashok Reddy, CEO of KX "For the vast majority of structured tasks in Capital Markets, you can run deterministic evals to ensure your performance continues to climb over time, while retaining the freedom to swap out underlying models whenever needed." — Farhang Mehregani, CEO of Engine AI "The AI model is the engine, but the harness is everything around it that turns that engine into a safe, usable car. The model proposes, but the harness provides the context, constraints, and verification." — Ashok Reddy, CEO of KX Resources & Links Learn More About Engine AI: Visit engineai.comLearn More About KX: Visit kx.comSubscribe: Get latest episodes and key takeaways delivered straight to your inbox at engineai.com/podcast
