    In our previous text, Stephen is chosen to serve to set up a kind of equitable feeding program. And in a matter of just a couple of verses, the clearest thing we learn about him is that he is full of trust in the LORD, full of the Holy Spirit, and wisdom. Hes even singled out among the seven particularly, highlighted not because of his leadership acumen, not because of his social status, not based on age or rank. Stephen is highlighted because of his trust in God and because he is full of the Holy Spirit. Stephens story is an inflammatory and brief cameo in the book of Acts, yet his influence is profound a life full of the Holy Spirit breaking new ground and stirring fresh imagination.

    When conflict is not handled well in a church, it rarely goes away on its own; instead, it tends to fester, can lead to broken relationships, disunity, and significant spiritual, emotional, and community damage. Gossip spreads, trust is eroded, and the church's witness to the community is severely damaged. In our text today, the "honeymoon" stage of the early church is over, due to time, numerical growth, increased needs, and the challenge of uniting diverse people groups. Yet as is the case in our text, God will often use our conflict to refine our character, clarify vision, teach humility, and strengthen the people's unity by maturing people as authentic communicators and having people step up and share responsibility for the health of the community.

    Opposition, Prayer, and Boldness — Part 2

    Once again, Jesus followers are brought before the religious leaders, and once again, the religious leaders are unable to stop them. Even the religious leaders are beginning to suspect that to fight against Jesus is to fight against God. As we continue to track the development of the early church, we see a community marked by a reverent and whole-hearted commitment to Jesus, as well as a persistent witness to Jesus, which is corroborated by the miraculous work of the Spirit.

    Opposition, Prayer, and Boldness — Part 1

    If we pay close attention, well notice a subtle shift from Acts 4 to Acts 5. When Peter and John are first arrested and interrogated by the high council in Acts 4, the reader might still be biting their fingernails, worried for their fate. But once they are released, and Gods power continues to bubble up in the city through signs and wonders, the corrupt power of the high council rapidly and publicly drains. Even in the wake of physical harm, the apostles are not cowed or controlled. Toward the end of the passage, even after the apostles are severely punished by physical torture, they emerge joyful. The strange power at work in their lives is stronger than whatever the authorities can throw at them.

    Of all that we read in the first 5 chapters of Acts, it's certainly the signs and wonders that catch our attention. We read our text and get excited reading of all this activity may even leave us speechless. But all these signs were never meant to be an end in themselves. Signs and wonders point us somewhere or more accurately, they point us to someone.

    In Acts, we see that even when things go wrong, sometimes especially when things go wrong, God doesnt abandon the project, but at every turn his kingdom grows, often in odd and shocking ways. This is part of what were hearing in the passage today a harrowing scene of human failure, tragic consequence, and a growing reverence.
