Many parents were already worried about their kids being exposed to false information and other harmful content on social media before Meta’s surprise decision to drop its fact-checkers. Now, there’s reason to fear things are going to get even worse. On Tuesday, Meta announced it’s ending its fact-checking partnerships for Instagram and Facebook in the United States. Instead, users will be able to write “community notes” on problematic posts. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged that, as a result, the company will catch less “bad stuff” posted on its platforms. It’s not like social media platforms were all vetted and had strong sourcing for users’ posts before. But Zuckerberg’s decision makes it even more important for children to be taught how to sort out what they should and should not believe on social media. Parents can also use this opportunity to talk to their kids about why they should never share or act on claims they see online without fact-checking them first. 【vet 审查;sort out 分类】 Here’s what to teach them. Verify with mainstream media, not influencers: To check if a social media post is accurate, start by comparing it to credible, mainstream news outlets. If other outlets aren't reporting the same story, dig deeper. Parents should encourage kids to consume more news to develop critical thinking skills. Consider the source: Teach kids to assess who created the content, whether they’re trustworthy, and what their motivations might be. Influencers are not experts, so don't assume something is true just because it’s viral or gets many likes. Watch for signs of manipulation: Small errors like grammar mistakes or unusual details in pictures (e.g., AI-generated images) can indicate unreliable content. Strong emotional reactions are also a red flag, as misinformation often aims to provoke extreme responses. Understand algorithms and profit motives: Social media algorithms feed users more of what they engage with. Creators often profit from views, so be cautious about content designed to generate clicks or stir controversy. Encourage open dialogue: If kids are unsure about the accuracy of content, parents should research it together. This keeps the conversation open and teaches kids that media literacy is a skill to be developed over time. Parents should teach their children how to critically evaluate online content, helping them to avoid misinformation and stay safe.
