Vertical Axis Wind Turbines Could Double Wind Farm Efficiency

Superpowers for Good should not be considered investment advice. Seek counsel before making investment decisions. Watch the show on television by downloading the e360tv channel app to your Roku, LG or AmazonFireTV. You can also see it on YouTube. Devin: What is your superpower? Kevin: Persistence and flexibility. What if we could double the energy output of existing wind farms without using more land? Kevin Wolf, CEO and Co-founder of Wind Harvest, has been working to make this vision a reality. His team has developed vertical axis wind turbines that harvest turbulent winds near the ground, a resource previously considered unusable. The idea isn’t new; vertical axis turbines have been attempted for decades but failed to overcome engineering challenges. “The turbulent wind has stopped all other technologies from being able to make use of it,” Kevin explained. “It took a long time, a lot of money, and a lot of prototyping of full-scale prototypes…to finally have this product ready for the market.” The key innovation is a patented hinge system that solves a critical weakness of vertical axis turbines—mechanical stress on the blades. “Vertical axis turbines have failed for decades,” Kevin said. “The problem is they rotate 15 million times a year…every rotation, there’s a pull with a blade like an airplane wing and a push as it comes around the other side. That connection point breaks…[but] if you put a hinge, all that micro movement is taken up in the hinge.” The potential impact of Wind Harvest’s turbines is enormous. By placing them on existing wind farms, they can double the energy output per acre in ideal locations without requiring new infrastructure or land. “We can double the wind farm energy output with our turbines,” Kevin emphasized. He noted that this approach also avoids the costs and environmental impacts of developing new wind farms. “It’s a much faster way of developing new wind farms…as opposed to taking raw land, new habitat, and converting that into a wind farm.” Wind Harvest is raising capital through a regulated crowdfunding campaign on StartEngine. This effort allows small investors to support clean energy innovation. Kevin explained the unique challenge of funding such groundbreaking work: “There is a lot of doubt at the level of the venture capitalists…they want us to finish the third-party certification.” In the meantime, crowdfunding has allowed Wind Harvest to bridge the gap and move closer to commercialization. You can find more about their campaign on StartEngine (Top 15 in amount raised on StartEngine.) and be part of an investment opportunity to drive clean energy forward. tl;dr: Kevin Wolf’s vertical axis wind turbines harvest turbulent winds near the ground, doubling wind farm efficiency. Wind Harvest’s patented hinge system solves a key flaw in traditional vertical axis turbines. Deploying these turbines on existing wind farms reduces costs, accelerates permitting, and avoids new land use. Kevin attributes his success to persistence, flexibility, and consensus-building skills honed over decades. Wind Harvest is raising capital via crowdfunding to finalize certification and commercialize their turbines. How to Develop Persistence and Flexibility As a Superpower Kevin attributes his success to persistence and flexibility. “I do not like to not have something succeed,” he shared, adding, “I’ve learned over time that big things take a long time to do.” His training as a river guide and evolutionary ecologist shaped his ability to adapt. “You learn to take new data, change your mind, adjust your hypothesis,” he explained. By pairing this adaptability with relentless persistence, Kevin has overcome significant obstacles in his career. Kevin shared a story from his days at Wolfen Associates, where he helped the city of Sausalito reach consensus on a fire department expansion. After the city’s initial proposal failed, Kevin facilitated community meetings, allowing dissenting voices to be heard and their concerns addressed. By incorporating feedback and revising the proposal, the city council gained overwhelming public support in a re-vote. This experience highlights Kevin’s ability to persist through challenges while remaining flexible to new perspectives. Tips for Developing the Superpower: Embrace persistence by committing to long-term goals, even when progress feels slow. Stay flexible by adapting to new data and revising plans when necessary. Practice active listening to fully understand others’ perspectives. Help others clarify their thoughts by rephrasing and restating their concerns. By following Kevin’s example and advice, you can make persistence and flexibility a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you! Making AI Safer: Gregory Magarshak’s Vision for Responsible Innovation

Superpowers for Good should not be considered investment advice. Seek counsel before making investment decisions. When you purchase an item, launch a campaign or create an investment account after clicking a link here, we may earn a fee. Engage to support our work. Watch the show on television by downloading the e360tv channel app to your Roku, LG or AmazonFireTV. You can also see it on YouTube. Devin: What is your superpower? Gregory: Ability to combine existing technologies in innovative ways to create scalable, impactful solutions. The rapid pace of AI development creates both opportunities and risks. As technologies like agentic AI advance, concerns about safety, misuse, and unpredictability grow. In today’s episode, Gregory Magarshak, Founder and CEO of Intercoin, shared how he is working to address these challenges through his latest startup, SafeBot, and his broader mission to empower communities with responsible technology. Gregory explained, “We want our AI to be predictable. We want to engineer proper systems…SafeBot is exactly that: a sandbox where agents can build tools that are safe and auditable.” His focus on creating AI systems with built-in safeguards ensures that even the most advanced AI operates within controlled parameters. This vision prioritizes building trust and accountability, addressing real-world dangers like deepfakes or malicious bots. Gregory’s experience in the Web3 space informs his approach to AI. He sees parallels between the early days of blockchain and today’s evolving AI landscape. “People take the low-hanging fruit that gives them profits…but we could build serious, grown-up technology that’s decentralized and safe,” he said. His work with SafeBot, launched just two months ago, aims to create the infrastructure for safe AI tools that are also decentralized, transparent, and aligned with ethical principles. Beyond AI, Gregory’s company Intercoin is helping communities and organizations build blockchain-powered tools for collaboration, funding, and governance. From local community coins to global initiatives, he envisions blockchain as a way to create fairer and more transparent systems. Gregory shared that Intercoin is working on projects ranging from community currencies to tokenized crowdfunding efforts, even exploring opportunities to support national economies like Liberia with blockchain tools. Gregory’s work isn’t just about technology—it’s about empowering people. By creating decentralized, secure platforms, he’s helping individuals and communities regain control over their digital lives. Whether through AI or blockchain, his mission is clear: build systems that are not only innovative but also safe, ethical, and human-centered. If Intercoin or SafeBot is raising funds via regulated crowdfunding, don’t miss the chance to support these transformative projects. tl;dr: Gregory Magarshak shared insights on making AI safer through transparent, sandboxed systems like SafeBot. He explained how Intercoin builds blockchain-powered tools for communities, focusing on decentralization and trust. Gregory discussed parallels between AI and Web3, emphasizing the need for mature, ethical innovation. He shared examples of using technology like Apple’s app clips to empower community engagement securely. Gregory’s vision centers on empowering individuals and communities with tools that prioritize safety and transparency. How to Develop Assembling Innovation As a Superpower Gregory’s superpower lies in his ability to combine existing technologies in innovative ways to create scalable, impactful solutions. He described it as having the confidence to connect the dots between different technologies and see the path to solve complex challenges. Reflecting on his approach, Gregory explained, “I have a knack for assembling the components in very innovative ways…Once I see the path, a lot of the steps can be done.” Gregory shared an example of rolling out a “groups app” designed to help communities securely organize and engage. An aha moment occurred when he leveraged Apple’s little-known “app clip” technology, which allows users to load a lightweight app instantly without downloading it. By combining this feature with secure blockchain and encryption tools, Gregory created a seamless, safe way for communities to connect. This approach exemplifies how he uses his ability to integrate technologies to solve real-world problems. Tips for Developing the Superpower: Seek inspiration from existing tools: Explore ways to use underutilized technologies, like Apple’s app clips. Think modularly: Focus on combining technologies rather than reinventing foundational layers. Identify the “path through”: Train yourself to see how A connects to B and beyond. Prioritize safety and ethics: Build systems that are secure and transparent by design. Leverage open standards: Use interoperable and standardized tools to create scalable, reliable solutions. By following Gregory’s example and advice, you can make assembling innovation a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. Black History Comes Alive Through Milton Bowens’s Art

Milton: Believing in oneself. Black history isn’t just something to study; it’s something to feel, experience, and celebrate. This is the powerful message I took away from my conversation with Milton Bowens, the fine artist behind Milton 510 Studio. Milton’s work doesn’t just depict history—it reimagines it as a living, breathing force that connects the past, present, and future. Milton shared how his art draws inspiration from Black history and pop culture to create a unique, layered narrative. “I chose history,” Milton explained, “because I always wanted to be able to just have something that I could reference that would re-energize or re-spark my creative curiosity.” His work focuses on centering the African-American experience, blending historical elements with vibrant colors and textures in his mixed-media art. One of the most compelling aspects of Milton’s creative process is his use of storytelling techniques inspired by filmmakers like Ken Burns and Spike Lee. He described how this influence shapes his work: “If you look at my collage works, you’ll see that I deal primarily with the figures in black and white, and everything else around it is in this bold, vivid color. I’m making a visual reference that this is the information, this is the focal point.” This approach is both artistic and deeply educational, as Milton sees his work as a tool for sparking important conversations. For example, he and his wife recently created a 26-piece fine art alphabet series celebrating pivotal moments in Black history. This collection has traveled to multiple venues, including Alabama State University, and has been adapted into a set of collectible flashcards to make Black history accessible to more people. This year’s Black History Month holds special significance as it marks the 100th anniversary of the event’s recognition by the U.S. government. Milton spoke passionately about its importance: “Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Black History Week, set out to make this celebration about making sure that African American young men and women understood the contributions that African Americans had made and were making to America and society.” Milton’s art is more than something to admire—it’s a call to action. It reminds us that Black history is American history and that we all have a role to play in preserving and celebrating it. To see Milton’s work or purchase his Black history flashcards, visit Milton510studio.com. tl;dr: Milton Bowens uses art to connect Black history with storytelling, inspired by filmmakers Ken Burns and Spike Lee. He explained the origins and significance of Black History Month, marking its 100th anniversary this year. Milton shared his journey from a young graffiti artist in Oakland to a celebrated fine artist. His superpower, believing in oneself, helped him turn personal challenges into opportunities for growth. Milton creates engaging educational tools, like his Black history alphabet series, to spark meaningful conversations. How to Develop Believing in oneself As a Superpower Milton believes his superpower is the ability to believe in oneself. He explained that this belief stems from recognizing and fostering one’s inherent talent. “For me, art rescued me,” Milton shared, reflecting on how his creative gifts became his life’s purpose. He emphasized the importance of celebrating young people’s creativity, saying, “When your child comes home with this crayon drawing and they show it to you, don’t tell them, ‘Oh, that’s fine, sweetie.’ You take that piece of art, put it on the refrigerator, celebrate it, and you have just ignited a spark of creativity that will stay with that young person forever.” Milton recounted a pivotal moment from his childhood when art literally changed his life. After being arrested for tagging a police car at age 10, a mentor intervened during his juvenile mediation hearing and enrolled him in an art school. This opportunity set him on a path toward becoming a professional artist, allowing his talent to flourish. Later, even during his military service, art followed him—he became an Army illustrator after his commanding officer noticed his skill. Tips for Developing the Superpower: Recognize and nurture your natural talents—they can guide your path in life. Celebrate creativity in others, especially young people, to foster confidence and passion. Seek out mentors or become one for someone else to help unlock untapped potential. Embrace opportunities, even unexpected ones, that align with your talents. By following Milton’s example and advice, you can make believing in oneself a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you! Building a Vision for Haiti: The Global Eye Project’s Mission to End Preventable Blindness

Dr. Anshu: Thinking outside the box. Preventable blindness in Haiti affects countless lives due to the lack of accessible eye care. Dr. Anshu Chandra, founder of the Global Eye Project, has dedicated her career to solving this crisis. Since 2015, her nonprofit has worked to provide free eye exams, advanced treatments, and a sustainable care model by training local staff. During today’s episode, Anshu shared how her transformative journey began. After witnessing the dire conditions during a mission trip to India, she decided to focus her career on providing eye care to underserved communities. “I saw how much need there was for eye care and how rare it was for people to have access,” Anshu explained. This realization ultimately led her to Haiti, where the need for care was “so tremendous” she couldn’t look away. In 2015, she moved to Haiti with two suitcases—one filled with personal items, the other with medical equipment. Partnering with a local hospital, she established a clinic that has grown into a vital resource for the entire country. The clinic has provided over 132,000 free eye exams and performed more than 7,000 advanced procedures, including laser treatments and surgeries. But the impact doesn’t end there. Anshu’s commitment to sustainability has led to the training of local staff, many of whom now run the clinic independently. “Some of my staff members are orphans, and they’re now supporting their families and caring for their community,” she shared. The Global Eye Project is now raising $300,000 to build a new facility that will expand its services. The proposed clinic will include a surgical center and an optical lab, enabling the nonprofit to become more financially independent. It will also allow the team to continue offering free consultations to ensure no one is turned away. By addressing a critical need with compassion and ingenuity, Anshu is not only restoring sight but also creating opportunities for individuals and communities to thrive. You can support this life-changing work by visiting GlobalEyeProject.org and contributing to their campaign. tl;dr: Dr. Anshu Chandra founded the Global Eye Project to combat preventable blindness in underserved communities. The nonprofit has provided over 132,000 free eye exams and 7,000 advanced treatments in Haiti. Anshu’s sustainable model trains local staff to deliver care, empowering the community long-term. The Global Eye Project is raising $300,000 to build a new clinic with expanded capabilities. Anshu’s journey highlights the power of thinking outside the box to solve pressing global challenges. How to Develop Thinking Outside the Box As a Superpower Anshu’s superpower is her ability to think outside the box to solve complex challenges. Reflecting on her work, she explained, “I didn’t see a reason why this couldn’t happen. How hard could it be to go there, put up a clinic, and train locals?” Her innovative mindset enabled her to approach Haiti’s eye care crisis creatively, building a sustainable model that trains locals to provide care independently. One of the most striking examples of Anshu’s superpower is how she started her clinic in Haiti. Arriving with minimal resources, she trained local staff by having them practice on volunteers. Without advertising, word spread, and lines of patients formed. Over time, she transformed a rudimentary clinic with dirt floors into a well-equipped facility with 11 exam rooms, advanced diagnostic tools, and a sustainable care model. Tips for Developing the Superpower: Reframe obstacles as opportunities. Focus on the goal rather than the limitations. Start small but think big—break projects into manageable steps. Commit your time, energy, and resources to what you believe is possible. Build partnerships and accept help from others. By following Anshu’s example and advice, you can make thinking outside the box a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you! She is working to end disparities in eye care globally by bringing this service to remote areas and giving them health equity. She’s leading our efforts in Haiti and has built a permanent eye clinic in Fond-des-Blancs which provides client care and training for local residents. She’s also collaborating with other institutions in Haiti providing care via mobile clinics to address the immediate need as well as working on more permanent solutions by helping to further develop the Haitian ophthalmology residency program in Port-au-Prince. This would provide advanced training and access to equipment and supplies so ALL Haitians can have high quality eye care. She holds a Doctor of Optometry degree and did her residency from SUNY College of Optometry in New York. She was raised in India and the USA where her mother worked as a social worker with under-served communities and created programs to strengthen various skills to make members more independent. These influences have given Anshu an understanding of the needs of disadvantaged populations as well as practical, simple solutions to address those needs. Anshu has also provided eye care to communities in Nepal, Haiti, Peru, Lebanon, Tanzania, Honduras, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Indonesia, and India. Watch the show on television by downloading the e360tv channel app to your Roku, LG or AmazonFireTV. You can also see it on YouTube. Devin: What is your superpower? Gregory: I have the ability to recognize and reframe patterns. Startup failure rates have hovered around 90% for over 30 years. Gregory Shepard, Founder and CEO of Startup Science, decided to tackle this persistent challenge with a comprehensive, science-backed approach. His goal is nothing short of transformative: to reduce failure rates and create a better ecosystem for entrepreneurs. Gregory’s research revealed that 47.1% of startups fail within the first 18 months, with the remaining failures often linked to poor decisions made during that critical period. “There’s no industry I can think of that would be okay with 90% of the people trying to succeed failing,” he explained. “I decided to do something about it.” Startup Science offers a centralized platform where entrepreneurs, investors, mentors, and support organizations can connect and collaborate. Gregory has worked to eliminate fragmentation in the startup ecosystem by providing tools, resources, and education—all free for founders. This mission is fueled by his belief that entrepreneurship drives innovation and can create opportunities for people from all backgrounds. Gregory’s commitment to democratizing entrepreneurship extends to the way he’s raising funds for Startup Science. He’s launched a regulated crowdfunding campaign on Wefunder, allowing anyone—not just accredited investors—to support his mission. “If somebody invests in Startup Science, you’re investing into all of the startups that we’re helping, which is 100,000 of them at the moment,” he said. Gregory’s passion is deeply personal. Growing up in poverty, he understands the barriers many entrepreneurs face. That empathy drives his vision to create an accessible, equitable platform that empowers founders to succeed while transforming the global economy. By leveraging his scientific approach to analyzing startup success and failure, Gregory is helping entrepreneurs avoid predictable pitfalls and build sustainable businesses. His efforts could fundamentally reshape the entrepreneurial landscape, enabling innovation to thrive. To learn more or support this initiative, visit Startup Science’s crowdfunding campaign. This is an opportunity to back a proven entrepreneur who’s committed to doing good for the world. tl;dr: Gregory Shepard shares his mission to reduce startup failure rates with his platform, Startup Science. Startup Science connects fragmented startup ecosystem elements, offering free tools and resources for founders. Gregory discusses his scientific research on startup success and his passion for democratizing entrepreneurship. He highlights his Wefunder campaign, inviting anyone to invest in Startup Science and support entrepreneurs. Gregory explains his superpower, pattern recognition, and how it drives his success in building ecosystems. How to Develop Pattern Recognition As a Superpower Gregory’s autistic diagnosis has sharpened his ability to identify and reframe patterns; a skill he calls pattern recognition. “I have the ability to recognize and reframe patterns…startup science is a result of this,” he explained. Gregory sees connections others might overlook, enabling him to create solutions that integrate fragmented systems into cohesive ecosystems. He describes it as understanding how seemingly separate components interact, much like a solar system where the founder is the sun and other elements orbit around them. Gregory’s superpower was pivotal in building and selling Affiliate Traction to eBay Enterprise Marketing Solutions. He noticed that affiliate marketing—now a cornerstone of influencer marketing—was fragmented, with disconnected tools and processes. Gregory envisioned a unified system and developed software that brought these elements together. By connecting the dots, he transformed the industry and created a successful company, later replicating this approach with other ventures. Tips for Developing Pattern Recognition: Identify the structure of a system or process by analyzing its components and relationships. Observe how elements interact within a system and look for inefficiencies or gaps. Reimagine connected systems as an ecosystem where all parts work collaboratively. Practice applying this framework in various contexts, from business to social environments. By following Gregory’s example and advice, you can make pattern recognition a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you! Register Now! How Technology Can Advance Environmental Justice

Sanjana: Connecting the dots. Technology is often seen as a solution to the world’s biggest challenges, but it can also be a source of harm. In today’s episode, Sanjana Paul, the Executive Director of Rooted Futures Lab, shared how her organization is bridging the gap between technology and environmental justice to create a more equitable and sustainable future. Sanjana explained that environmental justice, as a concept, ensures equal protection from environmental harm, regardless of income, race, or geography. She shared a disturbing insight from Dr. Robert Bullard’s research: low-income communities and communities of color are disproportionately burdened by pollution and environmental hazards. “A kid anywhere in the world should be able to breathe and not be breathing in pollution,” Sanjana said. Rooted Futures Lab is tackling this challenge by merging education, research, and action. A key initiative involves hosting environmental hackathons, where young scientists and engineers learn to develop technologies with environmental awareness at their core. “We see hackathons as a fun and community-centric way to introduce hands-on environmental education,” she explained. These events inspire the next generation of engineers to think critically about the environmental impact of their innovations. The organization also collaborates with students and researchers to reimagine technologies like refrigeration systems through workshops that focus on reducing environmental harm. Additionally, they are conducting research on digital infrastructure, such as data centers, to analyze their environmental impact and propose sustainable alternatives. “We should be trying to be better engineers,” Sanjana emphasized. “How can we build transit systems that get us from one place to another without giving a kid asthma?” Her work highlights how technology, when approached thoughtfully, can be used to address systemic inequities and reduce environmental harm. By focusing on educating future engineers, conducting groundbreaking research, and fostering collective action, Sanjana and Rooted Futures Lab are paving the way for a greener, fairer future. tl;dr: Sanjana Paul defines environmental justice and explains its connection to technology and systemic inequities. Rooted Futures Lab educates young engineers through hackathons to foster environmentally conscious innovation. Sanjana highlights key projects, including research on digital infrastructure and sustainable design workshops. She shares how her superpower, connecting the dots, enables her to bridge fields for positive impact. Sanjana encourages collaboration, curiosity, and deep thinking to address environmental challenges effectively. How to Develop Connecting the Dots As a Superpower Sanjana describes her superpower as “connecting the dots.” She shared how her diverse background in electrical engineering, environmental science, and energy policy allows her to see links between seemingly unrelated fields. “These dots may not seem like they connect, but they really do to me,” Sanjana said. Her ability to uncover these connections enables her to address complex challenges, like bridging environmental justice and technology, with a holistic approach. Sanjana’s work at Rooted Futures Lab exemplifies her superpower. While working in atmospheric sensing, she observed the devastating impacts of extreme weather events and pollution. This inspired her to connect environmental justice with technology, leading to the creation of Rooted Futures Lab. The organization now focuses on educating engineers about the environmental impacts of technology, hosting hackathons, and reimagining infrastructure to align with environmental justice principles. Tips for Developing the Superpower: Be Curious: Treat every moment as an opportunity to learn or teach. Think Holistically: Look for connections between seemingly unrelated fields or ideas. Engage with Others: Work collaboratively in a community to tackle complex problems. Slow Down: Take time to reflect on root causes instead of reacting to immediate issues. Learn from Experts: Seek knowledge from those working in areas you want to understand better. By following Sanjana’s example and advice, you can make connecting the dots a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. Revolutionizing Diabetes Care: Dr. Prem Sahasranam’s Mission to Break Barriers in Education

Dr. Sahasranam: Emotional intelligence. Diabetes education saves lives, yet only 5 to 7 percent of people with diabetes ever receive it. This startling gap in care is the driving force behind My Diabetes Tutor, a telehealth platform founded by Dr. Prem Sahasranam. His mission? To make diabetes education accessible to everyone, regardless of geography or socioeconomic barriers. Dr. Sahasranam, a board-certified endocrinologist with nearly two decades of experience, explained how critical education is in diabetes management: “Studies have shown that just going through diabetes education reduces A1C by 0.73 points. At our program, our outcomes are two times better than the national average.” With over 9,000 patients served, My Diabetes Tutor consistently delivers remarkable results, achieving an average A1C reduction of 1.6 points—enough to significantly lower complications and mortality rates. The idea for My Diabetes Tutor was born out of necessity. Dr. Sahasranam shared a story about how two full-time diabetes educators in his rural California practice helped patients achieve exceptional outcomes. When they retired in 2018, he struggled to recruit replacements, a problem endemic to underserved areas. “I decided to build a telehealth program,” he said. “My goal was to solve an access issue and deliver diabetes education to people, irrespective of their zip code or language.” My Diabetes Tutor provides nationally accredited virtual diabetes education, covering medical nutrition therapy, continuous glucose monitoring, insulin pump training, and more. The platform recently launched the first-ever pediatric diabetes education program, a groundbreaking step toward addressing the needs of young patients. Dr. Sahasranam’s vision extends beyond patient outcomes to include investor participation. My Diabetes Tutor is currently raising capital through a regulated crowdfunding campaign on StartEngine. “I want investors to own a piece of our growth and be part of our journey,” he said. The company generated over $2 million in revenue last year with a 61 percent gross margin, demonstrating both impact and financial viability. Dr. Sahasranam’s work is not just about business; it’s a mission to transform lives. By breaking down barriers to education, he’s giving people the tools to manage their diabetes effectively, live healthier lives, and reduce complications. For those looking to make a difference—or simply to invest in a business delivering measurable impact—My Diabetes Tutor offers a unique opportunity. tl;dr: Dr. Prem Sahasranam founded My Diabetes Tutor to provide virtual education for diabetes management. The program addresses barriers to care in underserved communities by delivering telehealth services nationwide. My Diabetes Tutor achieves outcomes twice as effective as national averages in reducing A1C levels. The company generated over $2 million in 2025 and is raising capital via StartEngine crowdfunding. Prem credits emotional intelligence as his superpower, driving his mission to revolutionize diabetes care. How to Develop Emotional Intelligence As a Superpower Dr. Prem describes his superpower as emotional intelligence, honed through years of experience as a board-certified endocrinologist. He explained, “Most health systems focus on the biology of the disease and fail to address the human part.” By understanding the emotional and practical needs of patients, Prem has created innovative solutions to improve access to diabetes education. He added, “I learned from my experience and built the right team, content, and technology to bring in diabetes education, easily accessible for patients.” Prem shared a pivotal story of a patient who had been struggling to control their diabetes despite receiving appropriate medications. The patient hesitated to make a two-hour drive to see Prem but eventually visited his practice and met with a diabetes educator. Without altering the patient’s medications, the educator provided tailored guidance that helped the patient manage their condition. This experience inspired Prem to create My Diabetes Tutor, ensuring patients could access life-changing education from their own homes. Tips for Developing Emotional Intelligence: Reflect on past experiences to identify unmet needs and learn from them. Stay aware of the human challenges behind systemic issues. Focus on creating solutions that address both emotional and practical barriers. Build strong, empathetic teams that align with your mission. By following Dr. Prem’s example and advice, you can make emotional intelligence a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. MarathonFoto: Transforming Life-Changing Moments Into Treasured Memories

Brad: Listening deeply to understand the needs of athletes, race organizers, and sponsors. Running a marathon is a life-changing experience. The journey demands dedication, perseverance, and grit—and crossing the finish line is a moment to be cherished. MarathonFoto, under the leadership of its president Brad Kroll, has mastered the art of capturing these transformational moments and turning them into lifelong treasures. Brad, who joined MarathonFoto in 1998, fell in love with the endurance sports industry, which includes both running and cycling. His passion for the work is rooted in the unique ability of endurance events to inspire anyone willing to put in the effort. “Every runner has a story,” Brad said during today’s episode. “And these photos sort of bookend that story. It kind of covers the whole story for them and highlights what they’ve accomplished.” What sets MarathonFoto apart is its commitment to enhancing the experience for both runners and race organizers. The company captures thousands of images of participants across events in North America and Europe, offering athletes a chance to relive their monumental achievements. Brad explained, “We go and we capture these images of athletes… and we’re able to really enhance their whole experience and help them celebrate what they accomplished.” Beyond just photographs, MarathonFoto plays a pivotal role in supporting the broader running community. Brad shared that 30–35% of the company’s revenue is returned to race organizations, many of which are nonprofits. This revenue-sharing model not only funds future events but strengthens the community by providing resources for race organizers to improve their offerings. In addition to its financial contributions, MarathonFoto supports industry organizations like Running USA and the Road Race Club of America, which educate race leaders and promote best practices. By doing so, the company ensures that its impact extends far beyond the finish line. MarathonFoto’s rapid image delivery system, which provides runners with enhanced, shareable photos within minutes of finishing a race, exemplifies its commitment to customer experience. “Runners want that instant gratification of seeing their photo almost immediately after crossing the finish line,” Brad said. These images, enhanced for vibrant colors and optimal skin tones, allow runners to celebrate and share their triumphs with their communities. Brad’s leadership at MarathonFoto demonstrates the company’s dedication to uplifting the running community, celebrating personal achievements, and fostering inspiration for future generations of athletes. tl;dr: MarathonFoto captures life-changing moments at endurance events, enhancing runners’ experiences with professional photos. Brad Kroll’s strategic empathy drives innovation, ensuring athletes, organizers, and sponsors benefit. Brad encourages active listening and adaptability to build meaningful connections and deliver impactful solutions. How to Develop Strategic Empathy As a Superpower Brad describes his superpower as “strategic empathy,” which he defines as listening deeply to understand the needs of athletes, race organizers, and sponsors. This skill enables him to align MarathonFoto’s operations with the desires of all stakeholders. “If the athletes are happy, then the race is happy. And if the race is happy, the sponsors are happy,” Brad explained. By internalizing feedback and adapting the business to meet those needs, he ensures MarathonFoto delivers value that benefits everyone involved. Brad highlighted the development of MarathonFoto’s rapid image delivery system as a prime example of his strategic empathy. Runners expressed a desire to share their race finishes with friends and family immediately after completing a marathon. Listening to this feedback, Brad and his team developed a system to provide runners with enhanced finish-line photos within minutes of crossing the finish line. This innovation not only delighted participants but also strengthened relationships with race organizers and sponsors. Tips for Developing Strategic Empathy: Practice active listening by focusing on understanding others’ perspectives and needs. Ask clarifying questions to ensure you’ve captured the essence of what someone is saying. Reflect on feedback and adapt your approach to meet others’ expectations. Collaborate with your team to brainstorm and implement solutions that align with stakeholder needs. Continuously evaluate how your actions impact all parties involved. By following Brad’s example and advice, you can make strategic empathy a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.
