    Ride or Die Friendship, espionage, and the age-old question: How well do you really know your best mate?     Widow’s Bay Apple TV+’s Widow’s Bay (2026) arrives with a siren song of small-town mystery and supernatural scares, firmly planting itself in that eerie territory somewhere between Stephen King‘s entire back catalogue and “Parks and Rec”(Not that Quinny would know)… Created by Katie Dippold and starring Matthew Rhys alongside Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root, The series follows a skeptical small town mayor trying to revitalise a struggling island community… while said community politely insists that no… it is, in fact, extremely cursed. It’s seaside charm, folklore that refuses to stay folklore, and a creeping sense that the local tourism slogan probably shouldn’t be “The next Martha’s Vineyard and definitely not cursed”.  With its blend of horror and comedy, it’s the perfect playground for trope-spotting and an amount of nervous laughter.     Evil Dead Burn Welcome back to the podcast where long-running franchises are lovingly dismembered, reanimated, and occasionally set on fire… This week, we’re diving chainsaw first? into Evil Dead Burn (2026), the sixth entry in Sam Raimi’s gloriously gooey horror legacy. What began in 1981 as the original scrappy, cabin-in-the-woods nightmare has since morphed into a full-blown franchise of splatter, slapstick, and increasingly unfunny trauma. Directed by Sébastien Vaniček and starring Souheila Yacoub, Hunter Doohan, and Luciane Buchanan, this latest instalment swaps out “groovy” one-liners for something a little more… intense. Set around the worst family gathering… perhaps ever… the film promises Deadites, dismemberment and dread. Sadly it delivers a bit more dourness, depression and desultory franchise nods.     The Periodic Table of Awesome podcast - Supergirl

    Supergirl This week we rocket headfirst into the second film of the new-ish DC Cinematic Universe; Supergirl, a character who’s been orbiting the DC universe since the Silver Age, occasionally stepping out from Superman’s shadow to remind everyone that capes aren’t a boys-only club. Directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock alongside Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Jason Momoa desperately trying to wash off the fishy smell of Aquaman. We find Kara Zor-El trading Metropolis for the far reaches of space and her colourful costume for a pair of sunnies with a tan duster. There’s the CGI dog again, a revenge quest, and a tone that suggests that maybe this isn’t your Saturday-morning cartoon version of heroism. The film has already sparked conversations about how female superheroes are portrayed and whether they’re being written with the same complexity, agency, and messy humanity as their male counterparts… or whether we’re still stuck in orbit around old tropes.     The Periodic Table of Awesome Podcast - Obsession and Backrooms

    Obsession & Backrooms This episode we bravely wander into dimly lit corridors so you don’t have to (you’re welcome). This week, we’re diving headfirst into the ever-growing creepypasta-to-big-screen pipeline with Obsession (2025) and Backrooms (2026)—two films that prove the internet’s “what if this goes horribly wrong?” energy is alive, well, and making a serious dent in our sleep schedule. First up, Obsession, directed by Curry Barker, takes the classic “be careful what you wish for” trope and gives it a thoroughly modern, deeply uncomfortable twist; Starring Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette. Then there’s Backrooms, Kane Parsons’ leap from viral YouTube horror to full-blown A24 spectacle. Based on the infamous creepypasta born on the internet’s darker corners, the film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve as they explore a seemingly endless maze of eerie, liminal spaces that feel just a little too familiar.
