It’s great to see our host Justin bring back the podcast to celebrate and discuss the new “Batman: the Caped Crusader” series, the Bruce Timm-produced spiritual successor to Batman: the Animated Series. There was a long hiatus, but we all appreciate the effort it takes to make such an amazing show and give it away for free (but can support on Patreon)!
Like me, and probably you, Justin is a longtime fan of this series that you fell in love with as a kid, and only really learned to appreciate fully as you grew and matured. B:TAS was so smartly done, that it really benefits from viewing it through an adult lens. The guests he has gotten to interview over the years are really an incredible who’s who of writers, voice actors, artists and creators of all types who have worked on the series, or simply been inspired by it. Many of these guests have sadly passed at this point (2024), making this archive of episodes a wonderful living tribute to them.
Justin himself achieved his dream of working in animation at some point along the way (there’s not a ton of biographical info here, the focus is Batman)! This means he brings an interesting professional perspective especially to the show’s later episodes. He speaks about aspects of animated show-making that the layperson wouldn’t consider.
He’s also a heck of a nice guy, and incredibly funny. Although I miss the elaborately produced skits and ads of the early episodes, I can only imagine how much work it was to make them! The brief intros and off-the-cuff jokes continue the much-loved humor. I am just so appreciative that this podcast exists and that Justin put in all of this time, effort, and money to share his love of this most special Batman.
It’s reached so many others like me who feel the same way, even if it took us years to write a review. It warms the cockles of our hearts, and the cowls on our heads.
