Junia: Outstanding Apostle

Hidden in the final chapter of Romans is something that reads almost like the end credits of a film -- a long list of names that most of us are tempted to skip right over. But what if those names carry some of the most powerful spiritual lessons in the entire letter? Among them is Junia, a woman described as outstanding among the apostles, who alongside Andronicus endured the very real dangers of Roman imprisonment for the sake of the gospel. Their story challenges us to ask a hard but necessary question: what are we actually willing to risk for our faith? The early church was not a homogenous group of like-minded people -- it was a stunning diversity of Jews and Greeks, slaves and free, men and women, all brought together by the good news of Jesus. These names are not filler. They are a testimony to what the gospel does in the world, and a mirror held up to our own lives and commitments. It is a story in which reminds us that God pour out his Spirit on all people, both women and men.

The Daughters of Zelophehad: Faithful Daughters, Faithful God

Hidden in the middle of the book of Numbers is a story that most of us have never heard, yet it appears five times in the Old Testament. Five sisters, Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah, daughters of a man named Zelophehad, step forward in a moment of uncertainty and do something remarkable. With no brothers to inherit their father's portion of the promised land, they refuse to let God's promise slip away on a technicality. They walk straight to Moses, the priests, and the entire assembly and make their case. What drives them is not simply a desire for property. It is a deep, unshakable confidence that God's promises are real and that they belong to everyone God intended them for. God's response is immediate and direct: they are right. Their story frames an entire generation in Numbers, standing as a living example of what it looks like to trust God even when circumstances seem to close every door. For us today, the land they sought is a symbol of something far greater, the inheritance of a restored world where God dwells with his people forever. That promise is still ahead of us, and these five women remind us that faith means holding on to what God has said, even when we cannot yet see how it will come to pass.

Rethinking Bathsheba

The story of David and Bathsheba in 2 Samuel 11 and 12 is one of the most sobering accounts in all of Scripture, and it has much more to say to us than we might expect. At its heart, this is a story about power, how it can corrupt even the most celebrated leaders, and how God sees what others choose to ignore. We often come to this story with assumptions already in place, picturing Bathsheba as somehow complicit in what happened. But when we slow down and read carefully, the text simply does not support that reading. She was summoned by a king. She came, as anyone would. The narrative consistently portrays her as a victim of an abuse of power, not a willing participant. That distinction matters deeply, not just for how we understand Bathsheba, but for how we understand the way power operates in our world today. The same patterns we see in David, using influence to take what is not his, then scheming to cover it up, dismissing the human cost of his actions, are patterns we recognize in leaders across every era, including our own. What this story calls us to do is refuse to look away, to name abuse for what it is, and to resist the temptation to protect institutions or ministries at the expense of those who have been harmed. God did not look away. He sent a prophet to speak truth to power. That is a model worth taking seriously in our own communities of faith.

Deborah: Prophet and Judge

What does it look like when God chooses the most unlikely people to accomplish the most extraordinary things? In Judges 4 and 5, we encounter the story of Deborah, Barak, and Jael -- a narrative that turns every expectation about power and leadership completely upside down. Deborah stands out as a prophet and judge at a time when Israel had forgotten who God was and what He had done for them. Her faithfulness and confidence in God's word stands in sharp contrast to a people caught in a cycle of sin, oppression, and desperate crying out for rescue. The story invites us to ask ourselves an honest question: do we truly trust what God says, or do we, like Barak, hesitate and look for extra reassurance before we step forward in faith? As we trace this story together, we are reminded that the battle ultimately belongs to God -- and that He rarely wins it the way we would expect.

The God Who Sees

What does it mean to truly be seen? In a world where we can so easily feel like a number, a label, or simply a means to someone else's end, the ancient story of Hagar cuts straight to the heart of one of our deepest human longings. Hagar was an Egyptian slave, a foreigner, a woman with no social standing, and she was used by two of the Bible's most celebrated figures without ever once being called by her own name. Yet when she fled into the desert, alone and pregnant, it was God who found her, and God who called her by name. The story of Hagar in Genesis 16 invites us to wrestle with some profound questions about identity, about who gets to define us, and about whether God notices those who have been pushed to the margins. We see a striking contrast between how the people around Hagar treated her and how God approached her, and that contrast carries a message that reaches across thousands of years directly into our own lives. The name Hagar gives to God, El Roi, the God who sees me, is not just a historical footnote. It is a declaration that reframes everything we think we know about how God relates to the overlooked, the hurting, and the forgotten.

Redemption Hope

What happens when we make a choice we cannot take back? The story of Eve in Genesis 3 is one of the most consequential moments in all of Scripture, and yet it is not primarily a story about failure. It is a story about what God does in the aftermath of failure. We explore the unraveling that follows when trust in God is exchanged for self-determined wisdom, and we trace the ripple effects that roll through generations. But woven into the consequences is something unexpected: a promise. God speaks directly into the moment of greatest brokenness and declares that through the offspring of this very woman, evil will be crushed. Eve clings to that promise through the pain of childbearing, the grief of losing a son to violence, and the long silence of generations that follow. Her story challenges us to ask whether we are cultivating the kind of wisdom that trusts God even when everything around us suggests He is holding out on us. The spiritual invitation here is not to avoid mistakes at all costs, but to remain anchored to God's promises even when the fulfillment feels impossibly far away.

A Strong Ally

What does it mean to be made in the image of God? That question sits at the heart of the opening chapters of Genesis, and the answer is far more expansive than we might expect. Genesis 1:27 tells us that God created humanity in his own image, male and female together, as his representatives on earth. In the ancient world, only kings and rulers were considered image-bearers of the divine. The Bible completely upends that idea, declaring that every single person, regardless of gender, status, or ability, carries that dignity. As we begin exploring some of the overlooked women of Scripture, we are first grounded in this foundational truth: the story of the Bible is not centered on men or women, but on a God who works through both. When we see every person we encounter as an image-bearer of God, it reshapes how we speak, act, and relate to one another. That is not just a theological idea. It is a daily, practical call to treat people with the dignity they were created to carry.
