    Kaala Barna, A Women-operated Aboriginal Consultancy

    Samantha Shepherd is a Jaru woman with family connections to Halls Creek, Balgo and Wyndham. She grew up in many different towns and remote communities across the Kimberley and Pilbara which left her with a deep love of Country. She has a background in Environmental Engineering but she has primarily worked with Aboriginal communities in ways that serves them best. She works at Kaala Barna, a 100% owned and operated Aboriginal consultancy. They work between Western and Aboriginal spaces to ensure that Aboriginal peoples voices are elevated. She has two daughters and currently live on Nyoongar Boodja (Perth).

She is a co-founding member of Blacks in Tech Australia, an advocate for Women in Tech, and the creator of The Art of Otherness and Lifehacks from the Baobab, podcasts exploring identity, leadership, and personal growth through African proverbs.Her passion lives at the intersection of technology, culture, and identity, where she uses storytelling to spark connection, challenge narratives, and drive change.

    Dr Amrita Kapur is Secretary General of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF),  the world’s oldest feminist peace organisation, active in more than 40 countries. She leads the league’s global strategy and advocacy, advancing feminist peace, disarmament, and justice, and representing the organisation in high-level international forums.Dr Kapur has over 20 years’ experience with the United Nations and international NGOs in the transitional contexts, bridging peacebuilding, international criminal justice, and human rights law.She is recognised for her institutional gender leadership (UNRWA), gender peacebuilding and facilitation, deep expertise on sexual and gender- based violence, and for embedding gender perspectives into justice reform and peace processes.Her career also spans into the academic institutions. Her publications and policy work have shaped global debates on conflict-related sexual violence, accountability, and women’s leadership in peace and security.

    Language & Decolonisation ii

    In this week's episode, we listen to part two of Fiza's conversation with Dr Sarah Wijesinghe. Sarah is a senior lecturer at Sunway University, Malaysia, with expertise in critical tourism, decolonization, and social equity. The conversation was recorded in an open air cafe in Kuala Lumpur, in the midst of Ramadan. As we shared about our roots - our origins, our childhood memories, and traced our routes that led us to this journey of decolonisation, you can hear the general cacophony of daily life. Having now returned to unceded Indigenous lands here, listening to the sounds of my own homeland has been a soothing balm, and the beautiful tapestry Sarah and I weaved together through this conversation reminds me of what bell hooks wrote in her book ‘All About Love’, that “rarely, if ever, are any of us healed in isolation.
