The PHP2Shell Exploit. What it is. What it means. What you need to do.

Regardless of whether you're a PHP developer or not, you'll have heard about the recent php2shell exploit, which was all over the mainstream news and internet in the last few weeks. And, you'll likely have been affected by it in one way or another. Given that it was such a significant event, and now that a little bit of time has passed, I thought it important to discuss what it is, when it was uncovered, what it means for the future of PHP (and the wider software development world), and what you need to do to protect yourself. So, in this episode, I do just that, quoting a range of sources (such as The PHP Foundation and the Security Now podcast) to make this discussion as meaningful, valuable, and as helpful as I can. Is software development by hand dying (or already dead)?

This wasn't an easy episode to record, but it needed to be done. In the "Age of AI" or the "AI era", is there a point to learning how to build a web application by hand? When AI tools, such as Claude, Codex, Gemini, Copilot — and so many others — can produce far more code far more quickly than we, as developers, ever could by hand, is (as I hear so many industry heavyweights saying) coding a dying (or already dead) art? For example, Troy Hunt says: You can't be a productive, competitive developer today without AI.Given that, maybe this podcast has had its day and should come to an end. But, I don't create the podcast for me. I create it for you, dear listener, and any one else who wants to learn how to build web applications — no matter what their motivation is for doing so.  So, I need your input to know whether it's worth continuing! If you are still interested in learning how to build web applications, the underlying technologies such as HTTP, HTML, CSS, databases, requests, responses, version control — and so much more, please get in touch and let me know.
