From the Archive: The Cost of Pulling Back from China in the EV Transition

For the month of August, we’re highlighting episodes from the 2025-2026 season of Energy Policy Now. We’ll be back with new content, and a new season, on September the 8th. John Helveston of George Washington University discusses why a U.S. pullback from China on EVs is risky, and why engagement could strengthen America’s auto industry. --- China has rapidly become the center of global EV innovation, producing cars that are cheaper, faster to develop, and increasingly competitive in international markets. The United States, by contrast, is pulling back, eliminating incentives and pursuing policies that distance the country from China just as the global EV transition accelerates. George Washington University’s John Helveston, whose work focuses on global EV markets and China’s manufacturing system, argues that this course risks sidelining the U.S. from the technologies and supply chains shaping the automotive future. On the podcast, he explains why a more pragmatic approach that protects national security and workers while engaging with China’s central role in the EV ecosystem may be essential for America’s long-term position in the global auto industry. John Helveston is an associate professor in the department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at George Washington University. Leah Solivan, TaskRabbit founder: How the gig economy falls short

“People just wanted to own the way they worked, but with that comes these institutional structures that have been built around the history of work that doesn’t allow for benefits programs or paid time off, or insurance. So there were all these things I knew that weighed on me. It wasn’t a perfect system.” The BBC’s Sarah Rogers speaks to Leah Solivan, founder and former chief executive of TaskRabbit, an app that connects people who need one-off tasks done by workers they can hire easily. Typical tasks include: errands, gardening, moving and furniture assembly. Founded in 2008, TaskRabbit helped pioneer the gig economy, giving workers greater control over when and how they worked. But that flexibility often came without the benefits associated with traditional employment. Leah reflects on the gaps in the model she helped create, why she believes TaskRabbit could have acted sooner, and what led her to sell the company to IKEA. The Interview brings you conversations with people shaping our world, from all over the world. Lawfare Daily: Mike Schmidt Talks CHIPS and U.S. Industrial Policy

When Congress passed the CHIPS Act in 2022, it was the first major piece of U.S. industrial policy legislation in decades and was intended to expand America's ability to manufacture the computer chips that are vital for everything from AI to phones and modern automobiles. Mike Schmidt, distinguished visitor at Princeton University's Griswold Center for Economic Policy Studies and a non-resident senior fellow at the Institute for Progress, was the first employee of the Commerce Department office tasked with turning the CHIPS Act into an actual program that is today supporting the construction of hundreds of billions of dollars of new semiconductor factories in places from Arizona and Texas to New York.  Schmidt joins Lawfare Contributing Editor and host of the Security Economics podcast Peter Harrell to discuss how the CHIPS program came together, challenges in implementation, and lessons for U.S. industrial policy in other critical sectors.  This episode is part of the Security Economics podcast series, in which Peter Harrell and guests explore the intersection of economics and national security, how countries manage their economies to support national security, and how they deploy economic tools in support of geopolitical objectives. 300.

Great Power Diplomacy: How to Prevent a Third World War

In this episode, Tobias Ellwood sets out why he believes we are drifting towards global conflict, and what can still be done to stop it. The order that has held since 1945 is coming apart. War in Ukraine, confrontation between the US and Iran, unresolved conflict in the Middle East and an intensifying rivalry between Washington and Beijing have produced the most dangerous strategic environment in a generation. Recorded during a live RUSI members webinar on 19 August 2026, this special episode features RUSI Distinguished Fellow, The Rt Hon Tobias Ellwood, discussing his new book: Ten Steps to Prevent World War Three. The webinar was chaired by RUSI Senior Associate Fellow Professor Beatrice Heuser with an audience Q&A. Key themes discussed are: How the West arrived at this point, and why the rules-based order has broken down. Where the risks of escalation are greatest, and how much of it would be deliberate rather than accidental. What grey zone warfare means for deterrence and Western defence planning. How artificial intelligence and computing will shape the speed and character of future conflict. The full recording is available to RUSI members on the Institute's website, where you can also sign up if you are not currently a member.
