What the Media Got Wrong About Hunter Biden

What the Media Got Wrong About Hunter Biden

Hunter Biden was found guilty for marking on an application that he was neither an addict nor a drug abuser on an application for m a firearm he owned briefly. He’s facing a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. The case calls into question the “wisdom” of our current Attorney General and puts a spotlight on an issue too many of us are familiar with: the criminalization of addiction.

This week Tiffany Cross has just come back from Côte d’Ivoire with stories and insights to share with co-hosts, Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum. Tiffany’s trip made her think: are Black folks in the states always checking what they’re saying, doing—even WEARING—to cater to white folks?

The Supreme Court will make decisions on a number of consequential cases this summer, including access to abortion pills, regulation of social media sites, and whether Trump is immune from prosecution for crimes committed in office. Watch out y’all, the activist court is ready to trash more of our rights.

And in Politics Are Everywhere, soccer star Vinícius Júnior conquered racism if even for a moment after three Spanish fans who hurled racist insults at him during a soccer match in 2023 were sentenced to 8 months in prison. It marks the first ever conviction in Spain for racial abuse at a soccer match. Vinícius responds to the conviction on Twitter, “I am a tormentor of racists.”  And we are here for THAT torment!!

Of course we’ll hear from you, our #NLPFam.

We are 145 days away from the election. Welcome home y’all!

Trump Justice for Everyone? | MiniPod

Trump Justice for Everyone? | MiniPod

On this week’s MiniPod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum and Tiffany Cross continue their discussion of Trump’s privileged treatment by the justice system. Certainly OUR justice system is much less forgiving. So should the system work for everyone like it works for Trump??

And they have some words of caution for Democrats celebrating Trump’s conviction by gleefully labeling him a “felon.”

    I Beg Your Pardon?

    I Beg Your Pardon?

Should Biden issue a pardon to Donald Trump for his federal crimes? Will that help with America’s standing or do we have 99 OTHER problems and Trump ain’t one?! There have been some Republicans and Democrats calling for a preemptive Trump pardon. Is this kind of grace-giving exactly what’s wrong with the Democratic Party?

Also, can Trump vote now that he’s been convicted? In Florida, where Trump lives, folks with felonies have limited voting rights and Trump does not qualify. BUT Florida's Governor, Ron DeSantis, has signaled that he’ll bend (READ: Break!) the law to allow Trump to vote. The hosts also take a look at voting after conviction more broadly and the stigma that follows returning citizens even after they’ve served their time.

The hosts also dissect a viral video of a man who faced incarceration after driving with a suspended license…hilarious as it may seem, there’s more to this video that mainstream media missed.

And of course we’ll hear from you, our #NLPFam—keep sending in your questions and comments on IG @nativelandpod.

Is Donald Trump Going Down? | MiniPod

Is Donald Trump Going Down? | MiniPod

Yesterday, the jury in the People of the State of New York against Donald J. Trump reached a verdict of guilty on all 34 counts. What now? Angela Rye explained why she isn’t popping bottles on Instagram Live.

Guilty, guilty, guilty— but is he going down like Mary J. Blige sang?!

    Polls Be Damned?!

    Polls Be Damned?!

Our prayers are with the families of those with loved ones in Rafah, but most importantly our calls to action are too. Where do we go from here, y’all? This week hosts Andrew Gillum, Angela Rye, and Tiffany Cross ask how many red lines have to be crossed before the Biden Administration takes meaningful action.

Speaking of Biden, there’s growing panic within the Democratic Party over increasing signs that the President is STRUGGLING to gain a lead in the 2024 election over white-supremacist and would-be-tyrant Donald Trump. The hosts look at the “signs” and debate the usefulness of election polling.

And in this week’s deep dive, the hosts respond to listener questions about folks in the community who question voting for Biden and who his base really is. We know y’all are struggling with this year’s presidential election and the feeling that folks have to choose between “the lesser of two evils”. The hosts navigate this struggle for themselves—IN REAL TIME—and offer some tips on how to talk to friends and family about it.

Gaza has been in the news a lot lately, including some truly horrific videos that have been coming from Rafah this last week. Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue his assault on the city despite the civilian casualties and increasing condemnation from the international community. So, what are we going to do about it?? SOMETHING. The call to act is upon us.

Sign the petition to support a presidential pardon for Marilyn Mosby at justiceformarilynmosby.com…yep, STILL.

Who Can Say the “N” Word? | MiniPod

Who Can Say the “N” Word? | MiniPod

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum discuss the “N” word—who should say it and who should not?

With an eye towards history and pop culture, the hosts look at why some folks choose to use this word—and use it, and use it, and use it—while others think that not even Black folks should say it. Along with funny stories about their personal relationships with this powerful word, we’ll hear about how the NAACP gave the “N" word a funeral, and touch on the politics of the “N” word in the Kendrick v. Drake hip-hop beef.
