Marty McDonald: You Are Not Alone

Olanikee Osi: What’s Wrong With Being Selfish?

If I asked you to define what it means to practice self-care and self-love what would you say? The key to all “practices” is you decide what they mean for you. For example, my definition of self-care could be wildly different from yours and neither of us would be wrong. When I sat down with Vanessa White, known as Olanikee Osi, the CEO and Founder of Goddess Detox Inc., and SelfishBabe, I asked her to define self-care, self-love and what it means to be selfish. I also asked her why she thought so many women struggle with the idea of being selfish and asked her what we could do to change that. But one of the things I believe most is that nothing has meaning except for the meaning we assign it. For example, when people think about the word selfish, they often think of it in terms of lacking consideration for others. This is what you’d find in the dictionary. But I always encourage people to go deeper, and when I thought about what it meant to be selfish, I saw concern for one’s own personal profit or pleasure. “Being selfish is about being honest with yourself and truly loving yourself. Self-love is selfish.” – Olanikee Osi Olanikee believes too many women struggle with the idea of being selfish because society tells us as women that we need to be taking care of others in order to feel fulfilled. In other words, we’re taught to nurture other people like we would the baby dolls so many of us grew up caring for. Be Unapologetically Selfish Self-love is about more than going to the nail salon or spending an hour in the bath. It’s about your mindset, and it’s about understanding and committing to putting yourself first. For the SelfishBabe app, Olanikee knew she wanted to create something where women could feed their mind and change their mindsets. She wanted to motivate them and give them the push they needed to take action on their ideas. “Me choosing myself is going to be the best decision for both of us.” – Olanikee Osi Many of you know my story – how I lost everything in the recession and ended up sleeping on my brother’s couch. But what you don’t know is a couple of years later he needed to borrow money and I said no. My family couldn’t believe it, but I knew what I was being called to do and I knew if let him borrow all the money I’d saved, I wouldn’t be able to do the things I needed to do. In other words, had I not taken that moment to be selfish and to put myself first, then I would have let myself down. And people may not get it in the moment, but it’s not for them to get. It’s for us to start to stand up and be unapologetically selfish. This Ain’t Ya Mama’s Self Help The SelfishBabe app uses choice language, but what I always tell people is, “You can’t miss the message because you get caught up in the minutia.” For me, I love my Christian music, but I also love my Snoop Dogg – to me, the app is a bit like that. The Six Pillars of Wealth - Part 3

When most people initially think about pursuing purpose, they usually jump right into deciding the type of work they need to do in order to earn the amount of money they hope to make. As a finance expert for the last decade, I’ve received tons of inquiries regarding how to successfully turn your passion into profit, but none that desire clarity around purpose. I believe work and money should be the last things we focus on because purpose should be our priority. Over the last three weeks, we’ve learned the truth about wealth and applied lessons from the pillars of wealth to help us live purpose driven lives. We mastered our Fit pillar when we decided to mentally become the best version of ourselves and physically commit to our own individual process. We progressed in our People pillar by enrolling others in our vision and enforcing stronger boundaries in our personal relationships. We cleared our Space pillar when we removed something small in our space and added touches of beauty, and we grew in our Faith pillar when we learned how to operate in integrity and make time to actually practice the faith we profess. Crystal Escobar: No More Shoulds

About our Guest: Crystal Escobar is a mother, author, entrepreneur, blogger, and podcaster and a wannabe balanced mom. When Crystal first became a mom she wondered if she could be there for her kids and be there for herself. She started exploring her quest for balance in 2010 and now she helps other moms find purpose and balance. She now juggles her blog, podcast, business, and four kids, sharing her journey along the way. Episode Summary: This is Part 3 of our Results NOT Resolutions series. Today, I am joined by Crystal Escobar an author and entrepreneur who says, "we cannot live our life based on shoulds." Today's focus is on the space pillar which is all about setting up your life to support you. We talk about achieving balance and when to let things go. We talk about how it is okay to ask for help and how creating a list with 30-minute intervals can help get things done and about why it’s critical to let things go and not worry about the expectations of others. CLIFF NOTES Don't live your life based on “shoulds” and trying to manage the expectations of others. Harmony can be an upgrade to balance. It's okay to have your own goals and aspirations and try to achieve balance in your life. Sometimes you have to let expectations go and accept that having kids means that sometimes your house will be messy and unorganized. Be organized and set up your workspace, so that you can focus on what you're doing and not be distracted by clutter around you. Multitasking and trying to do more than one project at a time will actually cost you time in the long run. To be productive, create a 30-minute list. List things you need to get done and use a timer to work on each item. It’s okay to set time aside for yourself and your work and get help or outsource some of the household stuff.
