    Sam’s Real-World Experience with Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)

What happens when your electric car becomes the biggest battery in your house? In this first episode of Accelerating - The Amber for EVs Podcast, Nick and Kent speak with Amber customer Sam Moyes from South Australia, one of the early participants in Amber’s vehicle-to-grid (V2G) pilot supported by ARENA. Sam walks through his fully electrified home setup - solar, battery, bidirectional charger and a BYD Atto 3 - and explains what it’s like living with an EV that can power the house and export energy back to the grid. The results have been impressive. Since joining Amber in September 2025, Sam is currently $825 in credit on his energy bill, including a single grid event on Australia Day that earned $723 in one day. This conversation explores how vehicle-to-grid actually works in the real world, the challenges of early-stage technology, and why Sam believes V2G capability will soon become a must-have feature when choosing an EV. Key takeaways ⚡ EVs can dramatically reduce household energy costs By exporting power during high-price grid events and optimising charging with Amber’s automation software, Sam’s home energy system has generated a significant credit on his energy account while covering all household electricity use. 🔋 Your EV can become the biggest battery in the house With solar, a home battery and a bidirectional charger, Sam’s EV integrates directly into his home energy system - powering the house, exporting energy to the grid, and acting as backup power during outages. 🔜 Vehicle-to-grid works today - but it’s still early Sam shares the realities of running an early V2G setup, including software quirks, warranty considerations, and the importance of car manufacturers supporting the technology. System Details• Sigenergy system: 30kW 3 phase inverter, 16.5kWh storage, EV DC bidirectional charging module• 13kW solar• 60kWh BYD Atto 3 2022 model• Based in SA on the SA Power Networks grid - RESELE tariff Credits Hosts | Nicholas Wodzinski and Kent Humphries Produced by Mark Spencer of Here Media Available on YouTube here
