In this episode, Gerrit walks through the conversion of Sidney Rigdon using the accounts of both Parley P. Pratt and John Rigdon, showing how Rigdon’s Restorationist background (Campbellite/Stone-Campbell movement) set him up perfectly to recognize the Book of Mormon and priesthood authority when they arrived on his doorstep. We hear how Rigdon loses his house, his pulpit, and his social standing.
From there, Gerrit goes on a very calm, measured, absolutely-not-passionate rant about the popular claim that Joseph Smith had “no witnesses” to his visions and revelations except the three witnesses, eight witnesses, Sidney seeing visions with Joseph, Oliver at John the Baptist and at Peter/James/John, Kirtland Temple experiences, and more. He also explains why the “no witnesses” line isn’t just wrong, but, as he puts it, is “stupefyingly stupid.”
