Ep 138. Joseph Millson (Empire of Lies)

Send us Fan Mail Joseph Millson on Empire of Lies: Two Characters, One Truth… or None at All?  There’s something quietly bold about a film that strips everything back. No sprawling cast, no distractions… just two characters, one setting, and a story that leans entirely on tension, dialogue and trust. That’s exactly what Empire of Lies sets out to do.  In the latest episode of The MarshyCast, I sat down with Joseph Millson to talk about the film, which he also co-wrote alongside director Matthew Hope. The result is a tightly wound psychological drama where every line matters… and every silence might mean even more.  One of the most fascinating aspects of the film is its simplicity on paper. Just two characters. But as Joseph explains, that’s exactly where the challenge lies. With nowhere to hide, the performances have to carry everything. And that’s where Natalie Spence comes in, bringing a presence that constantly keeps the audience guessing.  We also explore how the characters come to know each other, and how their relationship slowly unfolds in a world shaped by conspiracy and uncertainty. It’s a film that plays with perspective… asking the audience to question what’s real, what’s manipulation, and whether the truth is ever fully within reach.  Of course, there’s one big challenge when talking about a film like this… the twist. And without spoiling anything, let’s just say it’s the kind of ending that reframes everything you thought you knew.  Joseph also opens up about how involved he was on set, having written the film, and what he ultimately hopes audiences take away from it. Is it about truth? Control? Or simply the stories we choose to believe?  One thing’s for sure… Empire of Lies isn’t a film that gives you easy answers. And that’s exactly what makes it linger.  🎧 You can hear the full conversation now on The MarshyCast, available on Apple, Spotify and wherever you get your podcasts.  Find me on all social media @paulswampymarsh
