You Might Also Like: Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

Introducing Dave Grohl from Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond. Follow the show: Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond The magic of Dave Grohl isn't just that he's one of rock music's great raconteurs, or one of its greatest drummers and frontmen of the last thirty-plus years. It's the sheer number of lives he's gotten to live within rock and roll. Dave started out drumming for Scream, one of DC's great, underrated hardcore bands, running in the same circles as Ian MacKaye and the Dischord crowd. Then he joined Nirvana and more than made his mark in one of the most consequential bands since the Beatles, and an indelible piece of Seattle's music story dates all the way back to Jimi Hendrix and Quincy Jones. And then, as if that weren't enough: Foo Fighters. Which Dave Grohl essentially built by himself — Prince and Stevie Wonder-style — writing and recording nearly every note on the debut alone, save for some guitar from Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs. On today's episode Justin Richmond sits down with Dave at the Foo Fighters' studio to talk about their twelfth album, Your Favorite Toy. But they start somewhere unexpected talking about a song from a cassette-only solo record in 1992 he made under the pseudonym "Late!"  You can hear a playlist of some of our favorite songs from Dave Grohl HERE. “Mercy” by Duffy

In 2008, Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy looked ready to take over the world of music. Her Motown-inspired single “Mercy” was a huge hit all over the globe (with the notable exception of the United States.) Despite its moderate chart success in the US, the song was featured in movies, TV shows, and it even earned her a Grammy. Duffy’s momentum continued into her second album, and just when she seemed poised to NEVER be discussed on a podcast about one hit wonders, her career suddenly hit the brakes. Years later, she shared the harrowing story behind the reason for this, and a forthcoming documentary will shed even more light on her tragic story. Though we’ll undoubtedly learn so much more about Duffy once it’s released, we’re diving into her life, times, and soulful music this week on the show.  One Hit Thunder is brought to you by DistroKid, the ultimate partner for taking your music to the next level. “How Do You Talk to an Angel” by The Heights (f/ Jim Logrando and Trisha Novy)

The Heights was a short-lived TV show about a diverse seven-piece band that aired on Fox in the early 90s. Each episode ended with a music video that kinda encapsulated the whole episode, and at the end of the pilot episode, a young actor named Jamie Walters sung a song so powerful that it would be the end of the road for, well, “End of the Road” from Boyz II Men’s epic 13 week run at #1 on the Hot 100. “How Do You Talk to an Angel” would then become the show’s theme song by the third episode, and this fictional band was topping the charts. Funny enough, the show is called The Heights, and the band lives in an undisclosed place called “The Heights”, but they never actually say that it’s the band’s name on the show. It’s unclear if the band even had a name. It didn’t matter. Despite the song’s massive success, the show was canceled after 13 episodes, and we’re left to wonder how many more hits the show could’ve spawned if Aaron Spelling hadn’t given up on it. This week, we’re joined by the married couple of Jim Logrando and Trisha Novy to decide if there were even MORE heights that could’ve been reached if this television band could’ve gotten that Season 2 renewal.
