Control the Controllables: How Your Thoughts Shape Your Teaching and Leadership

We had a team education recently with Dr. Chelsea Pierotti, and there was one idea that really stuck with me afterwards. Control the controllables. It sounds simple. But the more I sat with it, the more I realized how often we do the exact opposite — especially when we’re teaching or running a studio. If you teach, you’ve probably had those moments where something just feels off. People aren’t responding the way you expected, the energy isn’t quite there, or something you planned isn’t landing. And almost immediately, your mind starts trying to fix everything at once. That’s usually where it starts to go wrong. In this episode, I talk about what it actually means to shift your focus back to what you can control — and how much that changes your experience in the room.  And the more I thought about it, the more I realized this doesn’t stop at teaching. It becomes even more important when you’re running a studio. Because as an owner, it’s very easy to feel like everything is yours to manage. Your team, your clients, the business, the atmosphere… and at some point, that turns into trying to control things that you simply can’t. Because it’s usually not the situation that creates the stress. It’s how we’re thinking about it. FIBO 2026: What the Fitness Industry Got Right (And What It Didn’t)

We’re back from FIBO. After spending time inside one of the biggest fitness events in Europe, we wanted to sit down and talk through what actually stood out — not just what looked impressive in the moment, but what we think holds up once you step back into a real studio. Because events like this can be exciting, but they can also be overwhelming. There’s a lot of energy, a lot of innovation, and a constant stream of things that promise to be the next big thing. Some of it is genuinely interesting... and some of it, not so much. In this episode, we’re sharing what we felt was thoughtful, what didn’t quite land for us, and how we’re making sense of it all after having a bit of distance from the noise. We talk about the trends that seem to be growing, the areas where we think the industry is moving too fast, and where the human side of coaching still really matters. If you’re a teacher or a studio owner, this is less about what you should copy, and more about how to think clearly when you’re exposed to so many ideas at once. Because not everything that looks impressive at a big event translates into something meaningful in your day-to-day work.   Thank you to this season's sponsor, OfferingTree Simplify your pilates business with OfferingTree’s all-in-one platform. Before FIBO: What We’re Looking For (And Questioning)

Before FIBO: What We’re Looking For (And Questioning) We’re heading back to FIBO this year, and before we go, we wanted to take a moment to talk through what we’re actually paying attention to this time around. If you’ve ever been to something like FIBO, you know how overwhelming it can be. There’s so much happening at once — new ideas, new equipment, new concepts — and it’s very easy to get caught up in what looks exciting in the moment. We felt that last year. There was a lot that was inspiring, but also a lot that made us pause and question what we were really looking at. So this episode isn’t a recap, and it’s not about listing trends. It’s more about the lens we’re bringing with us this time. We’re talking about what we’re hoping to find, what we’re a little more skeptical about, and how we try to filter all of that through the reality of teaching, working with real clients, and running a studio. Because not everything that looks impressive actually translates into something meaningful long term. And at the end of the day, that’s really the question we’re interested in — what actually holds up once you leave the event and come back into your own space? We’ll come back after FIBO and share what we found, what surprised us, and what we’re still questioning.   Thank you to this season's sponsor, OfferingTree Simplify your pilates business with OfferingTree’s all-in-one platform. Part 1: Who Should Be Teaching Pilates Teachers?

Part 1: Who Should Be Teaching Pilates Teachers? A Conversation About Standards, Experience, and Responsibility in Pilates Education The Pilates industry is growing — and with that growth comes an important question: Who is qualified to teach teachers? In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah and Christian begin a necessary and honest conversation about standards in Pilates teacher training — and what it really means to step into an educational role. Because teaching teachers is not simply the next step in a career. It carries responsibility. It shapes how future instructors understand movement, bodies, and the people they will work with. As more programs continue to appear, the line between teaching classes and educating teachers can become blurred. This raises important questions about experience, readiness, and the long-term impact on the industry as a whole. This episode does not aim to give a final answer. It is the beginning of a conversation — one that looks at responsibility, integrity, and the role each of us plays in shaping the future of Pilates education. Back in the Studio: Fear, Imposter Syndrome, and Returning to Teaching

Returning to teaching after a serious illness is not just a physical process. It is also emotional, psychological, and deeply personal. In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah and Christian reflect on what it was really like for Christian to teach his first classes back in the studio after cancer treatment. What did it feel like to stand in front of a room again?  What fears came up?  And how do you navigate the quiet voice of imposter syndrome when your body and life have been through something significant? This conversation is an honest look at the early days of returning to work — the uncertainty, the vulnerability, and the surprising ways that teaching and movement can reconnect us to ourselves. In this episode we discuss: What it felt like to teach the first classes back in the studioThe fears and doubts that surfaced in those early momentsImposter syndrome and rebuilding confidence after illnessWhy sport and movement have taken on a deeper meaningThe role self-care now plays in daily lifeWhat returning to teaching can teach us about resilienceFor teachers, studio owners, and anyone navigating a return to work after a difficult chapter, this episode offers a candid and human perspective on what that journey can look like. Women’s Bodies Are Not Neutral: Power, Autonomy, and Movement Spaces

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah sits down with terrorism scholar Gülden Hennemann for a thoughtful conversation about how women’s bodies have historically been used as sites of power, symbolism, and control. Across cultures and political systems, the regulation of women’s bodies — through reproduction, appearance, and social roles — has often played a central role in shaping authority and identity. But what does this mean for movement spaces today? As Pilates teachers and studio owners, we work with bodies every day. That makes it especially important to understand the cultural narratives surrounding strength, autonomy, and embodiment. In this conversation we explore: Why women’s bodies often become symbolic battlegrounds in political and ideological movementsHow narratives about “the ideal woman” reinforce social power structuresThe role of cultural pressures around clothing, appearance, and body normsThe connection between physical strength, embodiment, and personal agencyWhy movement spaces are not as neutral as we sometimes believeHow Pilates studios and fitness communities can foster autonomy rather than reinforce restrictive body narrativesThis episode is not about partisan politics. It’s about understanding historical patterns and asking how movement teachers can create environments that support autonomy, dignity, and strength in the bodies we work with every day. About Our Guest Gülden Hennemann is a scholar specializing in extremism, political movements, and the social dynamics that shape identity and power. Her research also examines approaches to countering extremism and preventing radicalization.
