    In the summer of 1987, three children discovered that the line between childhood games and the paranormal can disappear in an instant. Out on their grandfather’s land near a rumored Native burial ground in rural Montana, the days smelled of cut hay and pine resin — but at dusk, the yard belonged to something else. It began with a toy truck that hurled itself off a shelf, striking the wall with unnatural force. Soon came the faceless black boy crouched beneath the oak tree, holding their toy in silence before vanishing into thin air.  But the strangest apparition arrived at midnight: a 17-year-old girl in a faded blue dress, hair in braids, umbrella and purse in hand, standing stiff in the upstairs hallway — staring past them as though trapped in another time.
