They never taught us how to live without each other (Dead Sibling Society: Part Two)

No one prepares you for the moment that you lose your person. We will never compare one loss to another. We will never say that there is a loss that is worse, because grief is simply The Worst. But there is something uniquely horrible about losing a sibling. Siblings are our tethers to every moment of our lives — from childhood to teenagehood to adulthood — and are, most likely, the only people that could ever understand the things that molded you and made you who you are. But when you lose a sibling, you don’t just lose the person. You lose all those memories. All those moments. In March, we published an episode called Dead Siblings Society (Part One), where friend of the pod Steph Wittels Wachs shared her experience with sibling loss and we read through listener submissions from other bereaved siblings. Both guests of today’s episode were featured: Aaron, a friend of Nora’s from high school, and Emma, who wrote an email so beautiful that it left us and listeners in awe. Today’s episode is a conversation between Emma and Aaron, two bereaved siblings who lost brothers that were the other halves of their hearts. Trust us when we say that after you press play on this episode, you will be forever changed. Our operator (Nora!) is always standing by to take your texts and calls. Reach us at 612.568.4441. 442. The Kindness of Strangers

We said Ciao for Now, and now we're back... THINGS ARE DEFINITELY NOT OK RIGHT NOW! We know it. You know it. Your dog knows it (who told her??). But even when things are terrible, there’s something out there — however small — that is at least okay. Today’s episode is an exercise in finding (and sharing) the ok, with stories of the ways strangers have shown up for us in our times of need. Thanks to everyone who called (or texted!) in. Call or text us at 612.568.4441 any time. If you’d like to support the show (and get more of it) join us here. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Honest Motherhood with Libby Ward

What makes a good mom? Is it adhering to the perfectly packaged image of a shiny, happy woman cooking lavish meals with her 2.5 children, always cleaning, never complaining, and never NOT grateful, doting, and happy? No – but that doesn’t mean that the expectations are any more attainable. Any choice a mom makes is immediately subject to scrutiny or ridicule. Anything she does is under a microscope. She can’t miss a beat. She can’t wonder what her life might have been if she wasn’t a mother. And she DEFINITELY can’t do anything for herself. Today, Nora talks with Libby Ward, the author of the brand new book Honest Motherhood: on Losing My Mind and Finding Myself. Get a copy of Libby’s new book HERE. Watch us on YouTube here! 446. The Return of Ralph: It’s Going to be OK

Things are not good in the world right now, and you don’t need us to tell you that. But despair is also not good. Having no hope is not good. And Nora believes that the antidote to despair is action – doing things for others in whatever capacity you can. So she and her son Ralph are bringing back IGTBO for you as an exercise in seeing the OK things in the world around you, even when it seems like all hope is lost. Watch us on YouTube here!
