Winnie Byanyima, head of UNAIDS: I am somebody who fights for social justice and gender equality

“We live in a complex world, a challenging world. I am somebody who fights for social justice and gender equality, and I continue to do so. It's maybe a tough environment, but I do not change my position. I don't alter it at all.” Catherine Byaruhanga speaks to Winnie Byanyima, head of UNAIDS. Winnie has devoted her life to advancing human rights and equality, first in her home country Uganda, and then on the global stage. Part of the pro-democracy movement in Uganda, she is now a critic of the country’s leadership and what she believes to be the wrongful arrest and detention of her husband Kizza Besigye. And as the leader of a global organisation charged with co-ordinating the response to HIV Aids, she is having to weigh up funding cuts, a loss of trust in the UN and increasing global conflict. The Interview brings you conversations with people shaping our world, from all over the world. What is Driving Turkey's Foreign and Security Policy Agenda?

As the Middle East is facing grave uncertainty against the backdrop of what is being called the 'Third Gulf War', Ankara is managing an uneasy relationship with Iran. Turkey is projecting itself as a more consequential regional actor across a variety of regional security spaces and is often described as a 'middle power'. In this episode of Global Security Briefing, Dr Neil Melvin is joined by Dr Burcu Ozcelik, RUSI Senior Research Fellow, to analyse Turkey's relationship with Iran and the main limits of Turkey's regional approach to diplomacy. Did Vienna Invent the Modern World, Richard Cockett?

At the turn of the 20th century, Vienna was the capital of an empire in decline. Yet the city was a hotbed of intellectual cross-pollination, spawning new ideas and scientific innovations across fields ranging from physics and economics to psychoanalysis and the arts. In this episode of Future Discontinuous, hosts Misha Glenny and Eva Konzett invite author Richard Cockett to retrace Vienna’s ideational footprint around the globe. Together with their guest, they discuss the famed „Red Vienna“ and its anti-progressive „Black“ (as Cockett calls it) counterpart, touch on the origins of the term sexual revolution, and shine a light on the Viennese émigrés—women especially—whose legacy remains widely influential today. Richard Cockett is a journalist, historian, and academic. He is currently a senior editor at The Economist newspaper and a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. He was previously a lecturer in history and politics at the University of London, and has written several books about British and world history.
