Episode 5: The Midlife Crisis Women Aren't Allowed to Have

Have you ever stuffed your face into clean laundry to hide your crying, and had no idea why? That's where this episode begins. A summer evening in 2021, a house Jenny loved, a baby she dreamed of, a partner she adores — and a complete inability to feel present in any of it. In this episode of Dots and Dreams, Jenny explores the midlife crisis women are not allowed to have. She traces the term back to its origins (a man, studying men, in 1965), challenges the cultural images that have shaped how we understand it, and shares what her own version has looked and felt like across the last six years — through two pregnancies, a move to a small town, a layoff, and something she's calling peri-perimenopause. This isn't a tidy episode with a resolution. She's still in it. But She's found some anchors and she shares those too. If you've ever felt like you were falling apart in circumstances that looked fine from the outside, this one's for you. What You'll Walk Away With: Where the term "midlife crisis" actually comes from — and why it was never built for women The societal silence around women's identity shifts in their 40s Perimenopause: what Jenny didn't know and what her gynecologist got wrong Why postpartum recovery is invisible in the workplace — and why that matters The anchors that have helped: therapy, community, fiction, and owning your values Why she's talking about this now, before she's through it Timestamps: 00:00 - When crying into laundry becomes a moment of vulnerability 02:06 - The male-centric origins of "midlife crisis" 04:26 - How society medicalizes women's midlife transitions 07:04 - The unique challenges women face at midlife 09:01 - Perimenopause: the misconceptions and what I learned 10:48 - The importance of community and why it's harder to find than it sounds 13:11 - Navigating postpartum's invisible impact 14:20 - Why I'm calling it a female midlife crisis 17:25 - What actually helps: therapy, communication, reading, community 19:28 - Owning your value system as an anchor 21:00 - Sharing the struggle while still in it Resources & Links: Elliot Jacques and the origins of midlife crisis Fiction that has served Jenny during this period: Romantic Comedy — Curtis Sittenfeld, We All Want Impossible Things — Catherine Newman, I Could Live Here Forever — Hanna Halperin, Demon Copperhead — Barbara Kingsolver, The Wedding People — Alison Espach Music by Oakwood Station from Epidemic Sound and Peter Sandberg from Epidemic Sound. Episode 4: I'm worried about AI, how to keep up, how my kids will grow up, and will the world fall apart?

Two letters. Not new to the world, but ones Jenny never expected to think about as often as she has in the last 18 months. Two letters that have brought her sheer terror and extreme excitement, sometimes both in the same moment. In this episode of Dots and Dreams, Jenny gets honest about her relationship with AI as a millennial woman. The fear, the overwhelm, and the slow shift toward something that actually feels like control. She shares the three buckets of fear she's been carrying, how she started using AI in a way that works for her rather than against her, and the moment the wave she'd been watching finally started to feel like something she could ride.  This isn't a tech episode. It's a transition episode. And if AI has been sitting in the back of your mind making you feel small, this one's for you. If you’re worried about AI taking jobs, or just taking over, period, this one's for you.  What you'll walk away with: The three fear buckets that are holding most of us back when it comes to AI, and how to name them How to set up AI so it works for you, not the other way around Practical tips on setting boundaries with AI and maintaining mental well-being Why nobody has this figured out, and why that's actually the most reassuring thing you can hear right now Timestamps: 00:00 - The wave I can see coming, and why seeing it doesn't make it less scary 01:43 - From AOL to Instagram to AI: a marketer's journey through tech revolutions 05:30 - The fear of losing critical thinking 08:05 - Finding control in the AI landscape 08:34 - The three buckets of fear: professional relevance, thinking as the last frontier, and the bigger picture 17:25 - How Jenny manages her fears and stays sane 23:38 - The shift: from overwhelm to moments of genuine excitement 27:18 - Reality check: still not figured out, but finding her footing 27:38 - Outro Resources & Links Mentioned: Anthropic's 81,000 interview study on how people think about AI Jenny and Alice's YouTube conversation on their AI takeaways Whisper Flow Notion If this spoke to you, rate and review this episode wherever you're listening. Episode 3: Going Through Big Change is Lonely. The Pull is What I Focus On.

Jenny's first layoff happened in 2025, her seventh job search since grad school, and the scariest one she'd ever faced. But the hardest part wasn't unemployment. It was watching her family pack their bags for Monday morning while she had nothing waiting for her. In this episode of Dots and Dreams, Jenny gets honest about the year she spent navigating the job market in 2025, the self-doubt, the AI-generated rejection emails on Friday evenings, the well-meaning friends who told her to enjoy her time off. She shares the three things that actually helped her stop feeling alone in it. Not therapy. Not journaling prompts. Real, practical things that shifted something for this millennial woman. Because big transitions aren't lonely because they're hard. They're lonely because no one talks about their struggle while they're in it. If you're in the messy middle of a transition right now, this one's for you. What you'll walk away with: Why your network sometimes makes loneliness worse — and what to do instead How networking with vulnerability gets better results than networking with polish Why leaning into what pulls you, even when it makes no obvious career sense, can be the thing that gets you through Timestamps: 00:00 - The scariest job search of my career 03:31 - Getting laid off and the emotional weight of starting over 07:11 - Giving myself permission to explore what actually brings me joy 08:20 - How that exploration led to podcasting 11:53 - Leaning into the pull and accepting what that really means 13:07 - The tool that kept me sane and organized through all of it 14:16 - The emotional rollercoaster: waves of hope and sudden doubt 15:42 - Three things that actually helped with the loneliness 19:36 - Moving from job seeker to creator, and why that changed everything 21:04 - You are not alone in your messy middle If this spoke to you, rate and review this episode wherever you’re listening .It helps the show get discovered by more people. Episode 2: I Don't Fit In Anywhere, And Why That's a Superpower

She'd lived in Paris, San Francisco, New York, and the Basque Country. She spoke multiple languages and could walk into almost any room in the world. And yet, for years, Jenny felt like a puzzle piece that didn't quite fit anywhere. In this episode of Dots and Dreams, Jenny shares her deeply personal story of navigating culture shock as a millennial woman, displacement, and the slow realization that not belonging everywhere was never a flaw to fix. It was a superpower being built. She explores how a decade of feeling out of place across continents quietly became her greatest professional edge, and what it actually means to find belonging when you're always in motion. If you've ever felt like you're too much of one thing and not enough of another, this one's for you. What you'll walk away with: Why not fitting in anywhere is often the earliest sign of a future edge How constant cultural navigation builds skills no program can teach What it actually means to build belonging when you're always in motion Timestamps: 00:00 - Surrounded by loved ones but feeling alone 02:22 - Culture shock in 2006 and the emotional disconnect with home 05:16 - A decade of feeling out of place, and how it became a superpower 07:14 - The bench: a metaphor for belonging rooted in memories 10:24 - How The Culture Map changed the way I understood myself 11:24 - Returning to Paris with L'Oréal and discovering cultural agility as a professional strength 16:45 - Motherhood as a catalyst for reconnecting with her roots 18:26 - Building a mental bench all over the world 21:07 - Embracing constant movement as part of who I am If this spoke to you, rate and review this episode wherever you’re listening .It helps the show get discovered by more people. Episode 1: I Got Everything I Ever Wanted. So Why Can't I Enjoy It?

Twenty years. That's how long Jenny chased French citizenship, and when she finally got it, she felt nothing. No tears. No celebration. Just quiet, unsettling emptiness. In this first episode of Dots and Dreams, Jenny opens with the dream that started it all, and the unexpected emotional void that followed. As a millennial woman, Jenny explores why we rush through our biggest wins without pausing to feel them, why achievement and fulfillment aren't the same thing, and what it actually takes to stop and let yourself arrive. What happens when your dreams come true?  If you've ever crossed a finish line and wondered why doesn't this feel like I thought it would, this one's for you. What you'll walk away with: - Why high-achievers are wired to skip the celebration and move straight to the next goal - The difference between dreaming toward something and actually being present when you get there - A simple practice for pausing long enough to actually feel your wins Timestamps: 00:00 - Introduction and how it was 20 years in the making 04:24: The formation of a dream: Paris 09:12 - The long road to French citizenship 14:21 - The emotional impact of achieving dreams 15:15 - The sacrifices and loneliness behind the dream  17:28 - Celebrating milestones and living in the present 19:14 - Marking achievements with small, meaningful celebrations  23:55 - Finding joy in the journey 26:18 - The value of journaling and self-reflection during periods of change If this spoke to you, rate and review this episode wherever you’re listening . The Dots and Dreams Trailer is Here

Have you ever achieved something you dreamed about for 20 years and felt nothing when you finally got it? Or felt like a puzzle piece that just didn't fit, even surrounded by the people you love most? Or wondered if this transition, the one you're in right now, might be the one where you don't land on your feet? I've been there. Many times. Sometimes I'm still there. Welcome to Dots and Dreams. I'm Jenny — immigrant, marketer, mother, and serial reinventor. I've moved over 20 times, pivoted careers more than once, and somehow always landed on my feet. Looking back, I know it's no coincidence. There's a pattern. And I can help you see it too. In each episode, I turn my personal stories into case studies for moving through life's biggest transitions like motherhood, career pivots, relocation, reinvention, and navigating a world being reshaped by AI. You'll hear the struggle. You'll also hear the breakthrough. This isn't cheerleading or coaching advice. Think of me as the friend who's conquered the dream you're chasing and is still texting you from the middle of her own chaos. I'm here to show you the path forward through lived experience, not theory. If you're feeling stuck and think you're the only one going through this, you're not. You're in the right place. Everyone shares the win. I want to talk about the struggle to get there. New episodes drop every other Tuesday. Subscribe so you don't miss a single story.
