Today, we're diving into a thought-provoking interview with Hannes from Equilibrium Labs to get all the answers . Equilibrium Labs specializes in low-level protocol engineering, helping protocols become safer, faster, and more usable.



The core idea of "Will ZK Eat the Modular Stack?" revolves around two major trends: modularity and the expansion of ZK technology.



We also explored the trade-offs between optimistic and ZK security, as well a look into an expanded modular stack. The full stack now includes over ten components like User Operation Abstraction, Shared Sequencing, Data Querying, Long-term State Storage, and Security, going beyond the traditional modular stack's four components of Execution, Settlement, Data Availability and Consensus.



We're on the cusp of early ZK adoption across various modules, with RaaS providers and rollup frameworks starting to offer more and more options.

Frax started its journey as a decentralized stablecoin and has expanded significantly to include a broader range of DeFi tools and assets, making their modular L2 more appealing from our POV.

The backbone of Frax's operations is its modular L2, Fraxtal, which brings together protocols, liquidity, and monetary policies within one chain. Fraxtal enhances efficiency and transparency, setting a foundation for Frax to function akin to a decentralized central bank. Within this framework, Fraxtal uses an incentivization system known as Fraxtal points, which rewards popular contracts based on their usage and gas consumption.

This creates a reputation-based system that promotes sustainable development within the Frax ecosystem.

Additionally, we discussed how Sam plans to encourage the development of L3s atop of Fraxtal. This means dApps can launch their own chains while benefiting from the underlying Frax protocol and liquidity. This is part of Frax's fractal scaling vision, where L2 and L3s can generate revenue and contribute back to the overall ecosystem.

Did you know that Celestia was originally called LazyLedger? The idea behind this laziness stems from Celestia's minimalistic properties. By solely focusing on data availability with minimal smart contracts & execution, Celestia is able to provide cheap and secure data verification while outsourcing execution to other chains.


In today's episode, we set out to understand the origin story of not only Celestia, but also the now iconic Celestine Sloth Society NFT collection. The success and significance of the Celestine Sloths Society has came at a perfect time for the modular community.


We were joined by Zaki Manian, and Steven (sk) from the Celestine Sloths team and Nick White from Celestia to discuss the impact and origin story of the Sloths.


The Celestine Sloths Society was introduced with a fair launch exclusively for Celestia stakers, requiring one TIA token to mint each NFT, with a limit of one per wallet. They quickly soared in value and even surpassed Bad Kids in floor price, the biggest collection in Cosmos.
We discussed this rise of popularlity as well as the choice of the sloth as a thematic symbol for the modular community which creatively reflects the concept of the 'lazy ledger'—a playful nod to Celestia. We went on to unveil potential future developments, like modular sloth bodies and the expansion of the sloth IP.


Many of the community members are excited for the potential modular project token distributions to Sloths (like Lava, Mitosis, Initia, Movement and others), we also touched on whether there could be a Sloth token in the future.

Horizontal or vertical scaling...which way, western man?
In today's discussion, we're taking a closer look at Nil's strategic approach to blockchain scalability, focusing on the integration of horizontal scaling for Ethereum. We discuss the core idea behind Ethereum as the ultimate arbiter of truth for L2s, ensuring that any layer that claims to be an L2 can verify its activities through Ethereum's data availability and settlement guarantees.
We also discuss the state fragmentation situation at hand—an inherent issue when new chains are created, which leads to a lack of a unified global state. This fragmentation complicates interactions between different rollups within the Ethereum ecosystem.
To address this, we take a look at horizontal and vertical scaling...
Horizontal scaling involves adding more machines to distribute workload and enhance performance without significant hardware trade-offs, while vertical scaling focuses on enhancing the capabilities of a single machine, which can lead to higher costs and potential centralization.
We further went on to explore the nuances of modular versus monolithic architectures, Avi clarifies that neither inherently offers superior scalability. Instead, true scalability depends on effectively managing and expanding computational resources across the network.

The general idea and thesis we share is that we will see 1000s of appchains and the frameworks which are building for that future are in a good spot. In addition, we also believe there will be a ton of zkVMs (as introduced to us by Cem during this video) which will power rollups going forward.
This is also part of our "we don't need any more traditional EVM, general purpose L2s" thesis.
In today's video, were taking a closer look at Sovereign Labs. Sovereign is a project we've heard quite a bit about in the modular stack, which is builiding an SDK to launch zkRollups. Our discussion with the founder Cem Ozer, unpacks more of our thesis above.
We started talking about Cem's reasoning behind the name "Sovereign Labs" and touched on the noisy neighbor problem which sovereign rollups solve. We went on to discuss how the Sovereign SDK utilizes Rust-based machines, is partnered with leading zkVM providers like Risc Zero & Succinct, interoperability baked in for every rollup within Sovereign, and how all of this leads to providing a great user experience.
While we are particularly excited about Sovereign SDK, we managed to push back on some of the design choices such as not having their own underlying chain for distribution, and why a builder would choose the Sovereign SDK over a different stack like Cosmos SDK, OP stack, ZK stack and others.
We also found a quick moment at the end to ask Cem about their plans to decentralize Sovereign Labs, and what that future may look like.
