    Riffs

Riffs are pieces of music designed to catch your ear so you will recognise a song before any lyrics are sung. Two of the ‘catchiest’ riffs are in the Rolling Stone’s (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction and The Animal’s House Of The Rising Sun. Prominent also are the riffs in Dire Strait’s Money For Nothing and Heart’s driving riff on Barracuda. Considered one of the greatest rock n roll songs of all time Chuck Berry’s Johnny B Goode has a most recognisable riff. Other strong riffs can be heard on The Kink’s You really Got Me and The Beatle’s Day Tripper.   Playlist (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction – Rolling Stones Walk This Way – Aerosmith House Of The Rising Sun – Animals Money For Nothing – Dire Straits Johnny B Goode – Chuck Berry Pinball Wizard – The Who Eleanor Rigby – Zoot Barracuda – Heart You Really Got Me – The Kinks I Love Rock N Roll – Joan Jett Summertime – Ricky Nelson Day Tripper – The Beatles   To re-live previous episodes, visit joy.org.au/yesterdayoncemore ENJOY! Concerts and Music Festivals

This week Rob is joined by guest presenter Simon. The theme revolves around films of concerts and music festivals. Starting off is The Cure from their concert film The Cure In Orange featuring their big hit Close To Me. Probably the most lauded concert film was The Band’s: The Last Waltz. A highlight was their version of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. The film of the famous pop festival Woodstock showcased Neil Young’s introduction into Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young for their epic Suite :Judy Blue Eyes. The Aussie answer to Woodstock was the Sunbury Pop Festival in the early seventies. Very few female singers took part. One exception was Aussie troubadour Margaret Roadknight with her sardonic Girls In Our Town. Finally Elvis made a comeback film for television in 1968 which featured many of his hits including One Night.   Playlist Close To Me – The Cure Gimme Shelter – Rolling Stones Suite: Judy Blue Eyes – Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Jealous Guy – Roxy Music Girls in Our Town – Margaret Roadknight Space Captain – Joe Cocker Slippery People – Talking Heads Cabaret – Liza Minnelli The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down – The Band One Night – Elvis Presley Old Landmark – Aretha Franklin   To re-live previous episodes, visit joy.org.au/yesterdayoncemore ENJOY!
