The Sport Justice Movement with Dr. Shaun Anderson (Episode 38)

This week Shaunna is joined by special guest Dr. Shaun Anderson. Dr. Anderson is an associate professor of organizational communications and author of the forthcoming book Shut Up and Dribble: The Black Athlete Revolt in the Age of #BlackLivesMatter. He reminds us that sport and politics have always been mixed; athletes have long used their public platforms to call out social injustice. The difference now however is that, through social media and other outlets, athletes can control the way that they are engaging in the narratives around social injustice. The next step for all of us in the sporting community, is to begin to use these platforms to push towards engaging in true policy reform. It is not an easy fight; we are pushing against a systematic regime that has been in power for ages, but by educating ourselves, building a platform and speaking out, we can begin to make positive changes in sport and society. As part of the endurance sport community, if you listen to our podcast, we have a firm stance. We agree with Dr. Anderson, sport and activism are inextricably linked. Even if you are silent, inactive, and oblivious, you are still part of a system that maintains oppression against various groups. We challenge [un]phased listeners to stay awake to such issues, speak out even if your voice shakes, and become active in small ways as you find your momentum. Use your personal platform as an age group athlete, amateur athlete, aspiring professional, or pro to have these conversations about social injustice. This is even more important, given that the majority of those in our sport are not completely demographically in the communities that are most affected by these issues. To initiate change, we must become disruptors in the system. As co-conspirators and aspiring allies, we can (and should!) push our sporting organizations to create policies, practices, systems, and budgets that are equitable and inclusive. Learning to Thrive: A Runner’s Midlife Reinvention with Megan Eastwood (Episode 225)

This week’s guest ultrarunner Megan Eastwood is a portrait of perseverance. She’s lived through trauma, battled eating disorders, and been flattened by perimenopause. Through it all, she’s learned, grown, evolved, and ultimately thrived. Now 55 and postmenopausal, Megan is out in nature every week, running, climbing, skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, basically anything she can do outdoors. She’s completed numerous multi-day running events, where she generally posts top five in her age group, and currently has her sights set on 70.3 Ironman triathlon events. We talk all about her journey and learnings and what she wants other women like her to know. Megan Eastwood never considered herself athletic. She was the girl no-one wanted on their sports team at school. Now 50+ she’s finding the confidence to see what her body is capable of. She found ultra trail running in the UK in her early 20s, but an eating disorder ended any sports activity by the age of 30. Through career, marriage, and raising a family, she hit 39, overweight and not even able to run around the block. She knew she couldn’t enter her 40s like this and started running again. Living in Vancouver, Canada she quickly found the ultra-marathon scene. Perimenopause hit hard. Like many women she couldn’t understand why everything was going wrong. She dug into research and resources and turned her situation around. The Menopause 200 - An Ultrarunner’s Game Plan for Thriving Through Menopause with Kamm Prongay (Episode 108)

Ultrarunner Kamm Prongay is clear: she did not sign up for the Menopause 200. Her ovaries did. And when they did, she eventually found herself on the start line, unable to run. Kamm has been chronicling her journey through menopause in a series of essays in Ultrarunner.com, including one titled the Menopause 200, in which she shares her anxiety, brain fog, drenching night sweats, and ultimately performance decline and lack of drive to do the sport she loved. And this week, she shares that journey with us, as well as how she turned it around to regain her mojo, tame her symptoms, and get back on the trails. Kamm Prongay is a writer, ultrarunner, and veterinarian whose essays intertwine science, nature, people, and place. A child of the South, raised in the Pacific Northwest, Kamm spent time at sea as a Naval Surface Warfare Officer before coming ashore to pursue veterinary school, clinical practice, teaching, and research. She has contributed to four books, along with essays published in scientific journals and UltraRunning magazine. When not running or supporting trail races, Kamm lives with her wife, Liz, and two curious cats in Portland, Oregon. Time to Unlearn the Bullsh*t with Erin Ayala, PhD (Episode 197)

Female athletes of our generation have been told a lot of bullsh*t stories about what we’re supposed to look like; how much we’re supposed to weigh; what we’re supposed to eat (or more often not eat), and what we should or shouldn’t do in sports and training and life. We’ve lived through diet culture, sport diet culture, menopause diet culture. It is really hard to unlearn all those messages, but we owe it to ourselves to try. To liberate ourselves from the old bullsh*t that wasn’t even ours to begin with and rewrite our story in a way that is authentic and true. To help, we sat down with sport psychologist Dr. Erin Ayala, who shares how she helps women find self compassion and radical self acceptance for success and growth in midlife and beyond. Erin Ayala, PhD, LP, CMPC is a Licensed Psychologist and Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) offering virtual mental health therapy for athletes aged 14 and above. She provides one-on-one performance coaching, CMPC mentorship, clinical supervision, and group workshops for teams and sport organizations.
