Digital Freedom in Iran - Ep 2: The search for justice

Digital freedom in Iran In a new four-part podcast series of Boundaries Expression, journalist Jo Glanville talks to human rights advocates about the state of online freedom in the Islamic Republic of Iran and the future for freedom of expression. More than two years since the Woman, Life, Freedom protests, the series investigates the impact of the violent state crackdown, the restrictions on digital freedom of expression, and the fight for justice and accountability. Episode 2: The search for justice Jo Glanville meets Gissou Nia, founder and director of the Strategic Litigation Project at the Atlantic Council, and Bahar Saba, a senior researcher at ARTICLE 19. They discuss the aftermath of the brutal crackdown on the Woman, Life, Freedom protests in 2022 and the fight for accountability for the victims. As a landmark UN Fact-Finding Mission continues its investigation into human rights violations and crimes under international law related to the protests in Iran, the podcast’s guests consider the Iranian authorities’ ongoing repressive response to the protesters, the challenges for collecting evidence, historical and systemic impunity and the pursuit for justice. Jo Glanville is a journalist and audio producer. She regularly produces and presents documentaries for the BBC. Her journalism has appeared in the Guardian, New York Times, Financial Times and London Review of Books, among other publications. She was an award-winning editor of Index on Censorship and a former director of English PEN. She is editor of Looking for an Enemy: eight essays on antisemitism (Short Books/WW Norton) and Qissat: short stories by Palestinian women (Telegram/Saqi). Digital Freedom in Iran - Ep 3: Gender apartheid in Iran and Afghanistan

In the third episode in our series on Iran, Jo Glanville meets Professor Karima Bennoune, Lewis M. Simes Professor of Law at the University of Michigan and former UN rapporteur in the field of cultural rights. Professor Bennoune is leading a campaign for gender apartheid to be recognised as a crime against humanity. The term describes the institutionalised oppression of women based on gender. Professor Bennoune, alongside campaigners in Afghanistan and Iran, wants to change that, and is calling for gender apartheid to be included in a UN treaty to prevent and punish crimes against humanity.

Restrictions on right to abortion brings new threat to free speech in US

The United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade on 24 June 2022, and with it, the right to abortion as a constitutional right. A number of states took immediate action: in South Carolina, moves are underway to make it illegal to provide information about abortion; in Texas, people are being encouraged to spy and report on anyone who offers assistance to people getting an abortion. Jo Glanville talks to Quinn McKew, Executive Director for ARTICLE 19, First Amendment expert, lawyer and ARTICLE 19 trustee Bob Latham, and Alexandra Reeve Givens, CEO at the Center for Democracy and Technology, about the attack on reproductive rights, but also on people’s right to access information and to freely express themselves.

S2, Ep 6: Yalda Moaiery, Iranian photojournalist

On 16 September 2022, Iranian photojournalist Yalda Moaiery was out on the streets of the Iranian capital Tehran, capturing images of protests that were soon to sweep around the world. Days before, Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old girl from Kurdistan, had been arrested by Iran’s morality police, accused of not wearing her headscarf properly. Shortly after that, news emerged that Mahsa had died in police custody. Though the authorities have always denied it, eyewitnesses say she was severely beaten by prison officers, later dying of the injuries she had sustained. It was a pivotal moment for hundreds of thousands of people in Iran, who took to the streets, chanting “Women, Life, Freedom”. In this episode, Nicola speaks to Yalda about being detained in the notorious Qarchak prison, what she witnessed at the protests and the brutal crackdowns that followed. Nearly two years on, how much has changed for women in Iran, and for those who expose the truth about what’s really going on there? Though it rarely makes news headlines, in the Southern Caucasus a geopolitical battle is underway. Georgia is locked between democracy - with closer ties to Europe - and authoritarianism, with the Russian bear looming ever larger. It all started in April 2024, when a new law was introduced dubbed the 'foreign agent law', which mandated that any organisation receiving more than 20 per cent of its funds from abroad needed to register as organisations pursuing the interests of a foreign power. In response, tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets calling for closer union with NATO and the EU, and for the government to turn away from Russia. Here, Nicola Kelly speaks to Georgian journalist Tornike Mandaria about the growing movement and what these demonstrations tell us about the future of this embattled nation and its people.
