Dick’s Picks Vol. 36 — 9/21/72 Philadelphia, PA

In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault, we celebrate the Series Finale of Dick’s Picks as well as the Series Finale of 36 From The Vault. Featuring a complete show from Philadelphia, PA on 9/21/72, we also hear segments of 9/3/72 from Boulder, CO. One of the greatest Dick’s Picks of all time, it’s a fitting conclusion to the series and yet another showcase of the brilliance of September 1972. Disc One features the majority of Set One from 9/21/72 which includes a brilliant “Bird Song” as well a stunning take on “Loser.” A loose and vibey “China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider” showcases the standards heavy Set I played with exceptional verve. Disc Two straddles Set One and Two from 9/21/71 and is highlighted by an outstanding “Playing In The Band” closer before “He’s Gone>Truckin’” brings us into the second frame. An elongated 4+hr show, the staple of Disc Three is an absolutely incredible “Dark Star>Morning Dew.” Nearly 50min of stunning music, including 35+min of deep 1972 jamming, this is one of the greatest pieces of music released in the entire Dick’s Picks series. Disc Four closes out the Spectrum show before giving us a three song snapshot from Folsom Field with “He’s Gone> The Other One> Wharf Rat.” And with that, we’ve finally reached the end of the Dick’s Picks series. Branford Marsalis

Dick’s Picks Vol. 30 — 03/25-28/72, New York City, NY

In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault we find the band prepping for their Europe ‘72 tour with a run of shows at the Academy of Music in New York City. Featuring a set with Bo Diddley, this volume highlights the emergence of Keith Godchaux in the band + showcases some of the best Pigpen we’ve ever heard through the Dick’s Picks series. Disc One features the majority of The Dead’s set with Bo Diddley on March 25. Showcasing their brilliance as a backing band, we hear them dip into the Blues for perhaps the last time in the 70s. Highlighted by a stunning “Jam” between Diddley and The Dead we see an alternate path for the band + their ability to linger in a variety of American styles throughout their career. The disc ends with a few one-off covers for the band + an excellent “Playin In The Band” from March 27. The final three discs encompass the entire May 28th show. Featuring a number of rarities through the Dick’s Picks series, it’s a great peek into the band during this period. On Disc Two, Pigpen shines on “Chinatown Shuffle, “Mr. Charlie,” and “Next Time You See Me.” Jerry’s vocals on “You Win Again” showcase his ability to be as much a Blues man as he is a psych master, and “Cumberland Blues” rivals the version on the Europe ‘72 release. On Disc Three we hear perhaps the greatest “Looks Like Rain” ever played, plus we hear another excellent, early cut on “Playin In The Band,” before Pigpen highlights his emotional side with “The Stranger (Two Souls In Communion).” Disc Four displays the band’s experimentation with a lengthy “The Other One,” before closing the set out with a laid back “Not Fade Away -> Going Down The Road Feelin Bad -> Not Fade Away.” It’s a great snapshot of The Dead ahead of a transformative period in their career. Charlie Hunter

This week on Eric Krasno Plus One, Kraz talks with guitarist Charlie Hunter, who’s one-of-a-kind approach to the instrument has helped revolutionize it. He plays 7 and 8-string guitars, oftentimes playing chords, melodies, and basslines simultaneously, which he and Kraz discuss in the episode. Hunter has played in several highly respected groups, but most notably Garage a Trois, which he co-founded in 1998.
