    Cet article scientifique remet en question le modèle traditionnel du syndrome de friction de la bandelette ilio-tibiale, prouvant que cette structure ne glisse pas réellement sur l'os. L'auteur propose de renommer cette pathologie syndrome d'impingement, car la douleur provient de la compression d'un coussinet adipeux hautement innervé situé sous la bandelette. Ce phénomène est principalement causé par une faiblesse des muscles de la hanche, entraînant un mauvais alignement du genou lors de mouvements répétitifs comme la course à pied. En conséquence, les traitements classiques tels que les étirements ou les massages profonds sont jugés inefficaces au profit du renforcement neuromusculaire des abducteurs.
