Ceasefire Talks, Lessons From the Protests, Title IX

Ceasefire Talks, Lessons From the Protests, Title IX

Ravi welcomes Tangle's Isaac Saul back to the show to update listeners on the current state of the war in Gaza, including Israel's escalating attacks in Rafah and the proposed ceasefire deal. Ravi and Isaac then turn to college campuses in the U.S. to explore the complexities and potential unintended consequences of the ongoing campus protests. They also examine why so many protests throughout history have struggled to achieve their goals and what today's protestors should take from these learnings. Finally, Ravi and Isaac dive into the Biden administration's recent changes to Title IX. They take a look at what implications the updated rules have on due process rights in campus sexual assault and harassment cases, why due process advocates on both sides of the aisle are concerned about the changes, and what it means to protect the rights of both the accusers and the accused in these cases.

Isaac is the founder of Tangle, the widely regarded non-partisan newsletter that summarizes the best arguments from the left and right on the news of the day.

Trump's Hope Hicks Problem, Gun Scapegoats

Kim Wehle joins the show to talk with Ravi about the latest in the Trump case in New York, including why Hope Hicks is such an integral part of the prosecution’s case and how her recent testimony could inform the eventual verdict. They then discuss the presidential pardon power, whether self-pardons are constitutional, and how Trump may attempt to pardon himself regardless of the outcome of the 2024 election.

Ravi and Kim also discuss the controversial prosecution in the Crumbley case, the dynamics of the trial, and what the verdict means for future gun control legislation in the United States.

Kim is a professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law, a legal contributor for ABC News, author of How to Think Like a Lawyer – and Why, and founder of the Simple Politics Substack blog.

The Perils of the Trump Cases

The Perils of the Trump Cases

Ravi welcomes Amy Davidson Sorkin from The New Yorker to the show to explore the legal challenges of the various cases against Donald Trump, including the immunity case before the Supreme Court, and the potential consequences of a conviction before the election. They then turn to Joseph Fischer v. United States and discuss how the Supreme Court might rule on whether prosecutors can use federal obstruction laws to charge individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol attack.

Tim Daly, founder of The Education Daly and CEO of EdNavigator, then joins Ravi to explain why experts considered Finland the exemplar of quality education for many years and what we can learn from its steep decline. Ravi and Tim talk about how Finland's education system impacted advocacy around No Child Left Behind and why it's important to develop a deeper understanding of what drives educational success.

Protests Escalate, Ceasefire Talks, Trump Immunity

Protests Escalate, Ceasefire Talks, Trump Immunity

Will Hamas accept Israel’s new ceasefire offer? Ravi weighs in on Israel’s proposal of a 40-day ceasefire in exchange for the release of 33 prisoners and whether it could lead to lasting peace in the region. He then updates listeners on the latest at Columbia University after student protestors took over Hamilton Hall Tuesday morning, why it’s important to protect free speech, and the challenges university leaders will continue to face as they attempt to respond to campus protests around the country.

The Supreme Court listened to oral arguments last week over Donald Trump’s claim of immunity from federal criminal charges for trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Ravi looks at the potential outcomes of the case and what the implications might be.

Finally, Ravi welcomes Mark Keierleber, an investigative reporter at The 74, to the show. Mark and Ravi discuss the educator experience in 2024, from AI to school shootings. They also discuss the surprising ways students have begun to use AI, what it means to hold parents accountable if their children commit a crime, and why the debate over gun control in schools continues to fall along party lines.

Thoughts on the Protests + Weinstein and Cell Phone Debate

Thoughts on the Protests + Weinstein and Cell Phone Debate

Ravi kicks off the show by tackling three of the week’s biggest breaking news stories: what TikTok’s future in the U.S. looks like after President Biden signed legislation that will ban or force a sale of the platform, the rationale behind the New York Court of Appeals’ decision to overturn Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 sex crimes conviction, and what to know about the pro-Palestine protests that have erupted on college campuses across the country.
Ravi then welcomes Keri Rodrigues, co-founder and founding president of the National Parents Union and co-host of The National Parents Union Podcast. Keri and Ravi discuss the impact of Moms for Liberty, what Gen Z’s future looks like, and why there’s so much debate around whether students should be allowed to have their phones with them during school.
