Youth tramping programme helps kids explore the great outdoors

A programme facilitated by the Christchurch Tramping Club is helping introduce young people to the great outdoors, with more than 180 over-14s getting experience in the back country since it was set up five years ago. The Brian Dougan Youth Programme has been running since 2021 and more than 20 trips have been run - from day trips to Otamahua Quail Island, Packhorse Hut and View Hill to overnight trips to Woolshed Creek - all at no cost to participants. Participants learn how to pack for a trip, follow a trail and what to do in emergencies. There's a focus on introducing tramping and other skills, for those who would otherwise face barriers to the activity. It was set up by Christchurch Tramping Club member Liz Wightwick.

Predicting what the agri sector could look like in 2050

There are plenty of reasons for New Zealand's food and fibre sector to be optimistic about the future given current world prices, but agri experts are warning of a need to plan for a changing world. In its annual white paper on the future of this country's primary industries, Rabobank has asked a range of industry leaders for their take on what the food and agri sector could look like in 2050. It says the drivers for change including growing global demand for food, the rise of demands for community control and access to local food, and changing consumer demands labelled "identity eating." It also points to the role of the increasing role of AI and technology and planetary limits. The Chief Executive of Rabobank,Todd Charteris, talks to Kathryn from the Hamilton studio.

Tax accountant calls for leniency on crypto debts

A tax accountant specialising in cryptocurrencies says IRD is being relentless in its pursuit of taxes from profits made trading digital currencies such as Bitcoin. From April, the Inland Revenue has been collecting all data from crypto-asset platforms, over what New Zealand traders are doing. And with that it, identified 355,000 unique crypto-asset users in New Zealand - who have undertaken 57-million transactions, at an estimated value of $36 billion. Tax is due on any profit from a trade, in the tax year it was made - even if values drop afterward. Given the volatility of crypto, this can lead a large tax bill on assets that subsequently decline in value significantly. Accountant Tim Doyle says the IRD is now sending letters to those traders - notifying them of what they owe. Tim says he has clients who have been left in shock - with one owing hundreds of thousands for tokens traded years earlier, and that have dropped in value.
