    #3 When do we return to care?

    The black. A man. A table. Day six. Two days through hills that burned last September. Black trunks, black bark, black ground. And underneath, on the floor of the burn, the bluebells have come up. In abundance. The hill carries two tones now. Black above. Blue below. That evening, a long wooden table. Six people he does not know. The same plate for everyone. Soft voices, no questions — not yet. Only attention. Meaning rises between them, not inside any one of them. And then the tears come. No one moves to fix what arrived at the table. They let it be at the table. Day seven. Metal on the tongue before he sees anything. A tungsten spoil heap leaking a brown-yellow thread into the river. Across the water, ruins of slate houses — wild olive, fig, a pomegranate. Vegetation that knows where the soil was kept, because it is still kept. Two ways of being beside a river, visible in a single glance. He thought he was grieving the damage. He was not. The river does not grieve. She carries. The fire was not the last word. The earth has not refused. The compost has begun — on her time, which is real time too. This is the third episode. The grief is his. It is the size of the gap between what we know how to do and what we are still doing. When do we tend again? Not yet an answer. Not yet a vow. A question. Held.     #2 The hills are the river

    The hills. A man. Day eight. The river gone somewhere he cannot see. For days he walked beside the Zêzere, her voice between the boulders. Now the path climbs. Higher than the water. For long stretches the River vanishes. And a question he thought he was carrying turns out to be carrying him: where are you holding your shape, when your essence is asking you to flow? He sits under a cork oak. Salt on the tongue. Blisters tended that morning. Bees in the lavender. And then, looking across the green folds, something settles: "The hills are the river." No flanks, no flow. No flow, no flanks. Each shapes the other, long before us. What holds you was never the obstacle. It was the partner. This is the second episode. The Zêzere is not one thing. The river is the relation between all that makes her possible. The oak. The blister. Him. He stands. Picks up the sticks. Walks on — held by more than he can see.
