Gem of Haus of Codec | Maple Whiskey Sour

Crying While Driving welcomes Gem, the Operations and Development Director for Haus of Codec- a Providence-based nonprofit that provides safe housing for youth ages 18-24-to the couch this week for a maple whiskey sour! Their life’s passions include adding to their extensive library of local art, and advocacy surrounding public health, specifically HIV & STI prevention. Gem is originally from Rhode Island and has been a loud voice in political spaces sharing their own story of housing insecurities, mental health, and living with HIV. Gem continues its work in public health through Rhode Island’s HIV and STI Prevention Coalition. Haus of Codec provides youth in this transitional age group a place to call home, support to find permanent housing, and workforce development opportunities. The shelter space, which has been described by Gem as feeling more like a hotel, hosts food and clothing pantries, a shared bathroom and self- service kitchen, as well as access to essential services through partner providers. The shelter space provides a safe space and community for LGBTQQIA+ youth, staff, and volunteers.
