Domestic Worker & NGO Director: What It Means When Your Workplace Is Someone Else’s Home

Jo Ann Dumlao is a Filipino domestic worker who has been working in Singapore since 2007. She is a volunteer and writer with HOME, where she supports fellow migrant workers and shares lived experiences from within the community. Dr Stephanie Chok is the Executive Director of HOME. Her work focuses on the rights, wellbeing, and lived experiences of low-wage migrant workers, with a particular focus on domestic work and the structural conditions that shape it. 🟪 The “lucky to be here” narrative and why luck should never determine basic rights 🟪 What changes when a private home also becomes a workplace 🟪 Power dynamics and gaps between contracts and lived experience 🟪 Why practices tolerated at home would not be accepted in an office 🟪 What transparency, communication, and respect look like in practice This conversation invites viewers to move beyond simple narratives and see domestic work with greater nuance, empathy, and clarity. This episode is part of a wider collaboration with Maid of Honour, a student-led campaign by undergraduates from NTU’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, created to spotlight the lives and dignity of migrant domestic workers. If this episode gave you a new perspective, we encourage you to explore the Maid of Honour exhibition, running now till the end of February.
