    Simon Marks: US Correspondent chats Spirit airlines closure and Iran war updates

    US Correspondent Simon Marks joined Mike Hosking to chat the latest out of the USA. Trump has reportedly rejected Iran's 14-point peace plan which included forces to be withdrawn from near Iran's borders, and for all hostilities to cease including Israel's attacks in Lebanon. And, the fleet of fluro-yellow Spirit Airlines planes have been grounded as the company closes it's doors.     Karl Dean: Federated Farmers employment spokesperson on ACT's proposed daily surcharge on temporary work visas

    ACT's newly released immigration policy includes a $6 daily levy on temporary work visas to help fund infrastructure.  Federated Farmers employment spokesperson Karl Dean joined Mike Hosking to chat about the proposed changes and how they would impact our farming and agricultural industries.  "We struggle to get skilled migrants now, they look at Australia, they look at Canada, they choose those over New Zealand.     Jordan Williams: Executive Director at Taxpayers Union on report showing resident rates are up $451 on average

    Data from the latest annual ratepayer report shows rates are up an average of $451 nationwide to an average total of $3,386. The report additionally shows debt is climbing with councils owing around 220% of their annual rates revenue.     Dr Richard Sullivan: Health New Zealand national director says they want more permanent doctors

    Health New Zealand spent just over $216 million on locum doctors last year, up from the nearly $209 million spent in 2024, and just over $186 million in 2023. Health NZ clinical national director Dr Richard Sullivan says they are aiming to hire more permanent staff.  But, Sullivan told Mike Hosking, locums will likely always be necessary, "getting people in certain parts of the country is a problem, always has been a problem, probably always will be a problem."     Lawrence Meredith: EU ambassador to New Zealand says export increase shows trust

    Kiwi exports to the European union have increased by $3 billion in two years under the New Zealand-European Union free trade agreement.  In a press release Trade Minister Todd McClay said, “making full use of the agreement is vital in a time of global uncertainty and supports New Zealand’s goal of doubling export value within a decade." The European Union ambassador to New Zealand, Lawrence Meredith, joined Mike Hosking to chat about the numbers.  Meredith said, "I think it's a mutual trust is going up and mutual opportunities."     David Seymour: Acting Prime Minister on US call for aid and immigration policy

    David Seymour joined Mike Hosking as acting Prime Minister while Christopher Luxon is in Singapore. They discussed the big topics coming into this week including the war in Iran and the USA's call for support, and ACT's new immigration policy.  On the potential of NZ involvement in Iran Seymour told Hosking, "We're not going into a conflict zone, but if there was genuine, cross-partisan support for us to join a coalition of like-minded nations to ensure that trades on the seas can continue, that is in New Zealand's interest.     Mike's Minute: Do we have any choice but to help out the US?

    Well the war seems live now, doesn’t it. The Americans officially want our help. Which brings us back to the original question - if this encounter ends up ridding Iran of the ability to produce nuclear weaponry, has it been worth it? No, they didn’t see the Strait of Hormuz being the mess it is. You can debate that forever if you want, but ultimately there is no question Iran is done for and it's just a matter of time before they fold. The price is high, inflation is up, the supply chains for a lot of stuff like fertiliser and plastics and ceramics and oil doesn't look good. The economic damage is virtually everywhere. Is that the price we are prepared to pay to see Iran neutralised? Here is the tricky question; given no one asked us, why would we help now? The great diplomatic c**k-up from the Trump administration is they didn’t get buy-in. Unlike other conflicts no coalition was built. What made it worse was when he realised he was in trouble, Trump started whining about the lack of help. NATO and Britain got a good going over. Can you unilaterally start a war with global economic implications and then whine that we aren't too thrilled about lending a hand? In other words, does the so-called "favour" he has done us by finishing off Iran allow us enough positivity towards him to come to his aid? Also at play is the cold, hard reality of geopolitics. We are kind of obliged to help. We are in the American camp and if push came to shove they would help us. So we sort of have to assist when asked. And the fact we are tiny doesn’t help our cause because we need all the help we can get. As the Prime Minister told us the other day when I asked, almost in a way that he knew this was brewing. He offered the idea that our Boeing P-8A Poseidon could do some patrolling. We have sort of answered the question before it even needed to be asked, haven't we? Are we in? What choice do we have?
