    Smack Out and Dharma Berries: Steve Cash Before the Ozark Mountain Daredevils (1970-71)

    Smack Out is a place deep in the Ozarks where Cash and friends resided, and Dharma Berries is the title of an obscure poetry-and-art chapbook he produced in 1971 with Bob Burke, Jim Marshall and Elizabeth Anderson. This 29-minute audio program includes interviews recently with Jim Marshall, Jim Hansen and Harold 'Butch' McPherson. The latter two lived at Smack Out with Cash and Bob Burke. There are also the words of Steve Cash from interviews Kuelker conducted in 2014 and 2015. Steve Cash was born on May 5, 1946. He was an Ozark Mountain Daredevil from the band's founding in late 1971 until his death in 2019. He was also a science fiction novelist and painter, though he is best known for his lyric writing, harmonica playing and many years of recordings and performances with the OMD from the band's seminal self-titled debut on A&M Records in 1973 through Heaven 20/20 in 2019. Host Michael Kuelker, the author of The Ozark Mountain Daredevils on Record, first saw the OMD in 1981 at the VP Fair in St. Louis, MO.
