Our culture is constantly changing around us. A new story, new song, or new idea is being tweeted, posted or published every other minute. As the world changes rapidly around us, how do we respond? How do we stay rooted in our faith amidst a myriad of conversations? How do we stay grounded in truth when so much in the media is manipulated? How do we talk about our beliefs in a culture that may not feel the same way? Conversations about faith and culture meet right here on Teaology, the podcast. Teaology is all about communities coming together through conversation. We find common ground when we communicate well.

Why the Church Needs Women Who Resist with Tiffany Bluhm

In this episode, Maya sits down with author, speaker, and ministry leader Tiffany Bluhm, director of the Made for PAX Fellowship, for a conversation about faith, history, and the courageous witness of women. Together they explore what it means to be historically formed as Christians — not only understanding the Bible and church history, but also the global histories that shape the places we live, worship, and minister today. Maya and Tiffany discuss how Christianity continues to live in the shadow of imperialism and colonization, and why acknowledging those histories is essential for faithful discipleship in our current cultural moment. The conversation also turns to Tiffany's book, The Women We've Been Waiting For, which highlights the long tradition of women who have carried the communal call of the gospel — often in the face of resistance, exclusion, or silence. Drawing on both history and personal experience, Tiffany challenges women today to move beyond individual self-care toward communal care, courageous leadership, and a willingness to confront harmful or abusive leadership — even when it comes from within Christian institutions. This episode is a timely reflection on women's leadership, historical awareness, and faithful resistance. It asks an important question for the Church today: what does it look like to honor the women who carried the gospel before us — and to become the women the next generation is waiting for? Immigration, ICE & The Church | What Faithful Witness Looks Like with Jasmin Sosa

In this episode, Maya sits down with Jasmin Sosa for an urgent and deeply practical conversation about immigration, deportation, and the role of the Church in moments of crisis. Jasmin serves in missions and is part of Undivided, a faith-driven organization equipping churches to respond to injustice with courage and clarity. Big Churches, Weak Christians | The Discipleship Crisis with Danny Brister, Jr.

In this episode, Maya is joined by Danny Brister Jr. for a rich and necessary conversation about discipleship, biblical literacy, and the spiritual formation crisis facing the modern church. Together, they explore the long-term implications of the seeker-sensitive movement and how an attractional model of church may have shaped a generation that attends services but struggles with deep discipleship. What happens when churches prioritize accessibility but neglect formation? How has biblical literacy declined—and why does it matter? Maya and Danny discuss what it truly means to be formed by Scripture rather than merely inspired by it. They unpack the need for spiritual mothers and fathers, the loss of generational discipleship, and why reading the Bible was never meant to be a purely individual practice. Instead, they call the church back to communal reading, shared interpretation, and embodied spiritual growth. This conversation is for anyone wrestling with: shallow discipleship confusion about how to read the Bible, the effects of church culture shifts the need for deeper spiritual formation or the hunger for intergenerational mentorship. If you care about rebuilding a church rooted in Scripture, community, and mature discipleship, this episode is for you. Civic Education + The Narrow Way with Ola | Black People + Jesus

In this episode, Maya is joined by her friend Ola for a powerful conversation at the intersection of faith, politics, and public life. Maya and Ola discuss why civic education matters, how to research local politics, and what meaningful political involvement can look like for Christians who care about justice, dignity, and truth. Ola shares insights from her research on students and civic education, helping listeners understand why so many people feel disconnected from voting—and how that disconnection is often by design. They also debunk common myths about the southern border and immigration, centering the humanity and dignity of Latin neighbors in a climate shaped by fear, misinformation, and political manipulation. Together, Maya and Ola reflect on systemic racism in both politics and church spaces, the trauma of navigating racist spiritual environments, and how that contrasts with the refuge many find in Black churches. This episode explores what it means to pursue healing without abandoning faith—and how to walk the narrow way between progressive and conservative Christianity in a deeply polarized world. This is a conversation for anyone trying to stay engaged without becoming cynical, faithful without becoming silent, and politically awake without losing their soul. Healing from Trauma with Michaela | Black People + Jesus

In this episode of our Black History + Faith series, Maya sits down with her friend Michaela—a writer, housing discrimination advocate, and former international missions worker—for a deeply honest conversation about faith, burnout, trauma, and the long road toward healing. Michaela shares her experience of being clinically diagnosed with burnout, developing PTSD, going to therapy, and navigating life as the only Black woman in predominantly white international and European spaces. We talk about how proximity to white supremacy doesn't just shape our work—it reshapes our bodies, our nervous systems, and our relationship with God. Together, we wrestle with hard questions: What happens when faith no longer feels safe? How do we heal when church spaces mirror the harm we're trying to escape? Are multicultural churches truly liberating—or simply another version of assimilation? And how do we move beyond self-sufficiency toward real, embodied community? This episode holds space for disillusionment, triggers, and grief—but also for tenderness, truth-telling, and the sacred work of questioning God without abandoning him. It's a conversation about historical hurt, spiritual survival, and what it means to pursue healing in a world shaped by systems that were never built for our wholeness. For anyone carrying religious trauma, navigating racialized burnout, or trying to find faith again after harm—this one is for you.
