It’s an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Alexander Avina, professor of Mexican & Latin American History at Arizona State University, to discuss the recent results in Mexico's elections. Then, she speaks with Dr. Dan Wilson, from the YouTube channel Debunk The Funk, to discuss his recent video on Bret Weinstein and the recent Congressional committee hearings featuring Dr. Fauci. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel’s attack on a school shelter in Gaza, Israel’s obstruction to a ceasefire, Netanyahu’s turn to Hezbollah, Biden’s polling bump, Fani Willis’ major mishaps, Mondaire Jones’ conservative turn, abuse in Wisconsin prisons, NYC’s congestion pricing plan, and climate change, also parsing through Byron Donald’s attempt to “contextualize” his claim that Black families were stronger under Jim Crow. Professor Alex Aviña then joins, diving right into México’s overwhelming election of Claudia Sheinbaum as the continent’s first Jewish or female President, and an important stamp of approval as she heads into office hoping to cement President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s (AMLO) 20-point progressive platform, an agenda that will need all of the Morena coalition’s Lower House supermajority and Senate near-supermajority. Professor Aviña then steps back, walking Emma through the major reforms AMLO achieved during his 6-year term, including major judicial, economic, and labor changes materially (and visually) improving the lives of a vast majority of working-class Mexicans, before tackling some of the major leftist critiques of his Administration, including its “reformist” take on neoliberalism, continued support for the war on drugs, militant border maintenance for the US, and a non-transparent infrastructure project on the Yucatan peninsula. Aviña also expands on the central role ALMO’s ability to be a strong negotiator in US-Mexico relations played in his success, before wrapping up with the major role Sheinbaum’s Administration can play in cementing the progress (and righting some wrongs) of Mexico’s major progress over the last 6 years. Dr. Dan Wilson then jumps right into some of the major problems with public discourse around vaccines, such as their majorly misunderstood purpose and risks, and how the poor public health communication and severe misinformation during COVID severely inflamed these issues. Dr. Wilson then walks Emma through some of the major players in the anti-vax crusade of the last few decades, including third-party presidential candidate and HIV-AIDS denier RFK, before wrapping up with a conversation on long-COVID and vaccinations.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they talk with an anonymous caller about the importance of DACA recipients applying for legal entry before a potential Trump Administration 2.0, and Jack from Ireland dives into Derry’s colonial divide. They also discuss the recent photos from the assault of a journalist by Israeli extremists in East Jerusalem, parse through Gov. Hochul’s disastrous decision to kill NYC’s congestion pricing program (with help from Adam from New Brunswick), and laugh with (and at) some comedians, plus your calls and IMs!

After expanding on the particular role that Yossi Cohen’s Mossad played in initiating the project against then-ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda, Rapoport steps back to assess the widespread nature of Israel’s surveillance of ICC officials, why fear of criminal proceedings pushed Netanyahu to issue this authorization, and how they attempted to use the information to undermine the credibility of the ICC’s sources. After expanding on the internal awareness of the criminal nature of Israel’s genocide, Meron, Sam, and Emma wrap up by assessing whether the international backlash to Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Gaza has had any major impact on the Israeli public’s awareness.

Sam & Emma speak with author and historian William Hogeland, proprietor of the “Hogeland’s Bad History” newsletter on SubStack, to discuss his recent book The Hamilton Scheme: An Epic Tale of Money and Power in the American Founding. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on México’s election of Claudia Sheinbaum, Israel’s rejection of what was supposedly their own peace proposal as they blast through Biden’s Rafah red line, Hunter Biden’s legal woes, Bibi’s joint congressional address, reactions to Trump’s conviction, Fauci’s testimony, the Affordable Connectivity Program, climate change, the IRS’ free tax-filing service, and Dinesh D’Souza’s publisher issues an apology for publishing Dinesh D’Souza, before diving into Biden’s absurd claim that Israel was the one pushing the ongoing peace negotiations with Hamas, and how Israel’s offensive is likely to continue as Biden’s “red lines” shift ever backward. William Hogeland then joins, first reflecting on the introduction of Alexander Hamilton into popular culture with the recent musical phenomena, and how that provides the opportunity to present a more three-dimensional view of Hamilton’s political philosophy and impact. Now, Hogeland steps back to the inception of the US, and the central role Hamilton played in establishing a financial system that centered on the use of national debt to leverage the economic ambitions of the capitalist class in favor of a nationalist project by allowing them massive ownership stakes, while additionally reinforcing the elitist and anti-democratic makeup of the political class that Hamilton desired. After expanding on Hamilton’s relationship to the US Constitution, including unpacking the relatively subdued role that the Federalist Papers played in the actual ratification, Hogeland walks Sam and Emma through the backlashed faced by the US Federal government due to Hamilton’s wildly anti-democratic financial scheme, looking to both Shays’ Rebellion in 1786 and the Whiskey Rebellion in 1791 as clear cut examples of a coherent dissent and attack on Hamilton’s system of debt and regressive taxation, demanding follow through on the demand of “no taxation without representation” that Americans had fought for, also briefly touching on the greater makeup of this pro-democracy labor movement led by folks with Herman Husband and Thomas Payne. Next, Hogeland looks back to the enemies Hamilton had inside of the US political structures, from State Sovereigntists during the framing of the Constitution, to the Jeffersonian attempts to undermine and overturn his financial system throughout the start of the 19th Century, before wrapping up with the redemption of Hamilton’s legacy over the last few decades, and the particular role his thought played in the US’ response to the 2008 Financial crisis.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch an American nurse reflect on the harrowing experience of treating burn victims in Rafah, and discuss the myriad resignations-in-protests by Biden State Department officials, with the most recent accusing the agency of actively lying about Israel’s role in blocking aid to Gaza. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel’s seizure and closing of the Egypt-Gaza border, continuing backlash to Biden’s support for Israel, Trump’s legal woes and cabinet promises, NATO-Russia tensions, Alito’s corruption, Boeing safety problems, Hong Kong’s crackdown on pro-Democracy activists, elections in South Africa and Mexico, and India’s major heatwave, before diving deeper into the recent resignations from the Biden Administration, and touching on Trump rallying the cronies as his Hush Money trial reaches the jury deliberation phase. After expanding on the central role anti-feminism plays in the Alt-Right’s current trajectory, Dr. Leidig wraps up by touching on the particulars of the Alt-Right’s recruitment of young women and the major role interpersonal intervention plays in escaping the pipeline. Kate Wagner then walks Emma through this ongoing problem of the corporate “Disney-fication” of our cities, with an increasing trend of corporations buying up entire neighborhoods for glorified (and extremely exclusive) publicity stunts. Tackling the examples of Bilbao’s Guggenheim and the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Wager explores how these monstrosities exploit loopholes to essentially get the public to pay for the enclosure of their commons, before she and Emma wrap up with the central role that Private Equity and commercial real estate have played in promoting this process.
