Magnolia

A 3-hour raw nerve ending, Magnolia is considered a divisive film, but looking back at it now, it has gained in power over the years since it was released (especially depending on what age you are when you watched it). Every minute of this movie is an intense, screaming, crying, nervous breakdown - and yet it's ultimately an upbeat message in the end. Uncut Gems

I don't find this movie anxiety inducing at all. Perhaps that's because I'm a reformed degenerate gambler. The Safdie Brothers Adam Sandler starring film UNCUT GEMS is a ghost of Christmas future movie for me, one I enjoy watching because I avoided going down the path of the character in the movie. Zero Zero Zero (Amazon)

The best show you've been sleeping on, Amazon Prime's TV series Zero, Zero, Zero is a stunning accomplishment that interweaves one story of a massive cocaine shipment across multiple countries, with a stellar international cast (including Gabriel Byrne, Dane Dehaan, Andrea Riseborough), haunting music from the Scottish rock band Mogwai, and assured, compelling direction from the great Stefano Sollima (Sicario: Day of the Soldado). Mayor of Kingstown Season 2 (Paramount+)

If you listen carefully, you can hear me shouting in deranged glee, because Mayor Of Kingstown is back for Season 2. To my extreme joy, the show is not only back and better than ever, but has surprisingly taken up the mantle of The Shield, as a pitch black crime drama with deep emotional chords, shocking explosions of violence, and gallows humor. Jeremy Renner's real-life recent brush with death only makes it more impactful to see him fully in his element here. Bizarrely, the series has consistently gotten mixed to negative reviews from television critics. But look at the audience score on RottenTomatoes and you'll see there is a passionate fan base out there for this series. That said, I rarely hear people talk about it. The Sopranos

We're all trapped by our families. This is the central idea that makes The Sopranos great. I had no understanding of this as a 17-year-old, when I first tried to watch this television series. I had a much better understanding of it as a 33-year-old doing nighttime feedings of my newborn second child, which is when I binged the show in a couple months. What age did you watch The Sopranos? Avatar: The Way of Water

My biggest surprise of the year, since I'm on record as not being a fan of the first film. James Cameron's movie event of the year, Avatar: The Way of Water is a massive improvement over the first film. The themes of environmentalism and spirituality are better integrated into the plot and characters, the villain (all hail the great Stephen Lang) is now nuanced and complex, it's better written top-to-bottom, it's a great movie about family, the action is more effective, the world-building is more complex. It is long as hell, but for me personally the time went by in a flash. Did this movie work for you? Reboot (Hulu)

Don't be thrown by the title, this show is fresh, funny, and surprisingly TV-MA at times in its humor. Given the pedigree (from Steve Levitan, co-creator of Modern Family, starring Keegan Michael Key, Judi Greer, Rachel Bloom, Paul Reiser, and Johnny Knoxville), we should never have doubted it. Mayor of Kingstown End Of Season 2 Is One Of My Favorite Things (Paramount+)

Thanks for inviting me to your haunted house, you f**king pricks, I'm gonna be up all night. Season 2 of Mayor of Kingstown has concluded. A show that seems to live below the radar, Mayor of Kingstown became even better in Season 2. While it's not as slick and polished as other similar shows, the messiness of the show actually echoes the messy, flawed nature of the characters, which is what makes it great to watch. The series also leaned more into dark humor this season, to great effect. Jeremy Renner is great in this, and Tobi Bamtefa and Taylor Handley and Hugh Dillon and Dianne Wiest and Aiden Gillen and Michael Beach and Kenny Johnson... they all get moments to shine.
