    The Ars Goetia: The 72 Spirits Solomon Was Said to Command

    The Ars Goetia is the best-known section of the Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis, often called The Lesser Key of Solomon. In its surviving form, it is a seventeenth-century grimoire catalogue of seventy-two spirits, each assigned a rank, a name, an appearance, an office, subordinate legions, and often a distinctive seal. The book claims the authority of King Solomon, the biblical ruler famed for wisdom and, in later legend, command over demons or jinn. Yet the surviving manuscripts were copied more than two thousand years after Solomon’s traditional lifetime. This episode follows the manuscript trail through British Library witnesses including Sloane Manuscript 3825, through Johann Weyer’s sixteenth-century Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, and through Reginald Scot’s English transmission of Weyer’s material. It examines why names such as Bael, Paimon, Astaroth, Asmoday, and Belial entered a single hierarchy; why the later system settled on seventy-two spirits; and why seals, magical circles, triangles, sacred names, and the legend of Solomon’s brass vessel became central to the tradition. The Ars Goetia is not evidence that Solomon wrote a demon manual, nor is it simply a modern Satanic text. It is a composite work shaped by demonology, ritual magic, religious language, manuscript copying, and later occult interpretation.     The Apocalypse of Peter: The Banned Vision of Heaven and Hell

    The Apocalypse of Peter is an early Christian apocryphal work, probably composed in Greek during the first half of the second century CE. Written under Peter’s authority rather than generally accepted as the historical apostle’s own work, it presents Jesus revealing resurrection, judgment, paradise, and differentiated punishments for the dead. The text stood unexpectedly close to the boundary of scripture. Clement of Alexandria knew material from it, and a debated reading of the damaged Muratorian Fragment appears to place it alongside the Apocalypse of John while noting resistance to its public reading. By the fourth century, Eusebius classified it outside the accepted New Testament collection.     The Ascension of Isaiah: The Prophet Who Saw the Seven Heavens

    The Ascension of Isaiah is an ancient Jewish-Christian apocalyptic work attributed to the biblical prophet Isaiah but almost certainly composed and edited centuries after his lifetime. Its surviving form combines a martyrdom legend, in which Isaiah is accused under King Manasseh and sawn in two, with a visionary ascent through seven heavens. Guided by an angel, Isaiah witnesses layered angelic worlds, heavenly worship, hostile powers, and the descent of a mysterious figure called the Beloved, widely understood by Christian readers as Christ. The Beloved conceals his glory at each level of heaven so cosmic rulers will not recognize him, then enters the human world, suffers death, triumphs, and returns in glory. The text survives completely mainly in Ge'ez through Ethiopian Christian manuscript tradition, with Greek, Latin, Slavonic, and Coptic evidence preserving only fragments or partial forms. Scholars debate whether the Martyrdom of Isaiah began as an older Jewish tradition, whether the Vision of Isaiah was composed separately by Christians, and how much later editing shaped the final work. The book was not secretly removed from one universal Bible by a single council; its marginal status resulted from regional circulation, uncertain authority, theological peculiarities, language change, canon formation, and manuscript loss.
