S4 Ep 6 Val Kilmer: A True Maverick

Send us a text Daniel welcomes Guest Host Chris Scott to talk about the controversial career of generational icon, Val Kilmer. They discuss his impact on cinema, pop culture, and the films that defined decades of their lives. In this special episode, Daniel is joined by Chris Scott for a heartfelt and candid conversation about Val Kilmer—a star whose career was as bold and unpredictable as the characters he portrayed. Breaking from the usual format, the episode centers around a genuine discussion, with the only structured segment being the much-anticipated Top 5 list. Val Kilmer’s journey through Hollywood is a tapestry of risk-taking, reinvention, and resilience. From his breakout roles in the 1980s to his unforgettable performances in the decades that followed, Kilmer consistently defied expectations. His choices often baffled critics and audiences alike, but they also cemented his status as a true maverick—someone who refused to be boxed in by typecasting or industry norms. Kilmer’s influence stretches far beyond the screen. He became a touchstone for a generation, embodying both the rebellious spirit of the 80s and the complex, introspective energy of the 90s and 2000s. Whether as the cocky fighter pilot in "Top Gun," the enigmatic Doc Holliday in "Tombstone," or the tormented artist in "The Doors," Kilmer brought depth and authenticity to every role. His performances sparked conversations, inspired countless fans, and left an indelible mark on pop culture. Even as his career took unexpected turns, Kilmer remained a figure of fascination—misunderstood by some, revered by others, but never ignored. Though Val Kilmer’s career was marked by controversy and unpredictability, his passing left a void in the world of cinema. He was a star who burned brightly, often at great personal cost, and his absence is felt by all who admired his work and spirit. Val Kilmer was more than just a movie star—he was a true original, a maverick whose legacy will continue to inspire. Through this episode, Daniel and Chris celebrate not just the films, but the fearless spirit of a man who dared to be different. Music Support the show poppedpodcast.com

    21/10/2024

S4 Episode 4 The Fog "Curse of the Marrying Priest"

Send us a text How is it that the descendant of a Catholic Priest is also a Catholic Priest? Aren’t there rules against this sort of thing? That’s just one of the many mysteries we unravel as the Popped crew, joined by special guest Susan Wilde, dives into the chilling mists of John Carpenter’s 1980 horror classic, THE FOG. Set against the hauntingly beautiful backdrop of Northern California’s bay towns, The Fog introduces us to a supernatural phenomenon that brings more than just low visibility—it brings death. As the eerie mist rolls in, so do vengeful spirits, and the townsfolk must confront the dark secrets of their past. One of the film’s most intriguing puzzles: How does a Catholic priest end up being descended from another priest? We tackle this theological head-scratcher, exploring the film’s playful approach to religious lore and the rules that are bent (or broken) for the sake of storytelling. Did John Carpenter really strike gold twice, following up Halloween with another horror hit? We discuss the film’s atmosphere, pacing, and Carpenter’s signature style. Is The Fog a worthy successor, or does it live in the shadow of its predecessor? What We Loved (and What We Could Have Done Without) The star-studded cast, including Jamie Lee Curtis and Janet Leigh—two generations of scream queens. The film’s moody score and practical effects, which still hold up decades later. Moments that dragged or felt unnecessary—what could have been trimmed for a tighter experience? We share our connections to Janet Leigh, discuss her legacy, and point out subtle details and Easter eggs that even seasoned fans might have missed. Did you catch that blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo? We did! After dissecting the film’s scares, story, and style, we each give our official POPPED ratings. Is The Fog a must-watch for horror fans, or just a hazy memory from the past? JOIN US, IF YOU DARE! We’ll be there soon, pounding on your door, standing in a fog, just waiting for you to walk outside so we can… ask if you know our Lord and Saviour, John Carpenter.
