KXplores Emerging Research: Ashley tracks the spotted lanternfly

Invasive pest, the spotted lanternfly (SLF), has been reported in four Ohio counties and 14 U.S. states. The brightly colored red and grey leafhopper poses an economic threat to Ohio’s specialty crop producers. Entomologist Dr. Ashley Leach’s new research project detects SLF in the environment using biomonitoring, a process that tests for DNA left behind by the destructive pest. Episode 52 - Bunker and Silage Pile Safety

There are two primary risks associated with bunker silos and silage piles: a person working on top of the pile or the bunker falling off the pile/bunker, and second, a person or persons on the ground near the silo or pile being buried by a silage avalanche. All bunker silos and silage piles are not the same. Factors that should be considered when assessing safety risks are height of the silage, face management, and labor tasks. Episode 138: Advances in Urologic Cancer Treatment with Dr. Eric Singer

During the past decade “the number of new drugs and the pathways that we’re targeting has expanded so much; it’s a very exciting time,” said Eric Singer, MD, a kidney cancer specialist and the new division chief for urologic oncology at the James. In this episode, Singer discusses how and why he got into medicine and oncology, why he uprooted from New Jersey to come to Ohio State, and some of the many advances in treating urologic cancers. A new clinical trial for kidney cancer patients introduces targeted therapy drugs and immunotherapy drugs to patients prior to surgery. Another clinical trial utilizes different combinations of drugs; and another clinical trial uses “adjuvant” therapy after surgery. “It’s the idea that after surgery, even though there is no evidence of cancer, we give the drugs to reduce the chance of it coming back [for high-risk patients],” Singer explained. Urologic cancers include kidney, cladder, prostate, testicular, penial and adrenal cancers. The James division of urologic oncology is growing, and Singer is actively recruiting new surgeons. “I look for someone with incredible passion and a commitment to being a great surgeon, someone who is always thinking how does this benefit the patient,” he said. Singer also talked about how cancer has impacted his family, including his sister, who passed away from ovarian cancer. “Seeing her go through it … was heartbreaking and also so inspiring,” he said, adding her journey has inspired him to go above and beyond for his patients.

Episode 183: The Global One Health Initiative for Lymphoma, with Dr Robert Baiocchi

The reach of the James Cancer Hospital extends far beyond Central Ohio. As part of Ohio State’s Global One Health Initiative (GOHi), Robert Baiocchi, MD, PhD, is leading the research, vaccination and treatment efforts in Ethiopia for patients with lymphoma. “Lymphoma, a cancer of the white blood cells, is far more common in Sub-Saharan Africa, and afflicts people at a younger age” said Baiocchi, a James medical oncologist who specializes in treating patients with blood cancers. The prevalence of malaria and the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has led to the increased number of lymphoma diagnoses. “Starting in 2015 we opened a lab in Addis Ababa [the capital of Ethiopia] to study these viruses and how they cause cancers,” Baiocchi said, adding the initial research was to determine why the lymphoma rate was so high. “We’re zeroing in on a couple of interesting findings; children who get malaria and EBV, that seems to be the perfect storm [for lymphoma].” Differences in the genetic makeup of people in Sub-Sharan Africa could be another factor in the increased lymphoma rates. Baiocchi and his team, and their partners in Ethiopia, are working on vaccines for malaria and EBV. “Studies tell us the virus here [in the United States] is different from the viruses in Ethipia and the vaccines we use here won’t work there,” he said. “It’s important to understand the genetic makeup of EBV in order to develop a vaccine that will be effective in that region.” The standard of care at the James for lymphoma patients includes a combination of chemotherapy drugs – and has proven to be very effective. “The resources for this aren’t available in Ethiopia,” Baiocchi said, adding the James is developing a less-expensive, targeted therapy that shows promise. There are also plans to create a facility in Addis Ababa where lymphoma patients will be treated with cell therapy.

Episode 115: Advances in Treating Lung Cancer, With David Carbone

When David Carbone, MD, PhD, began treating lung cancer patients in the 1980s, “it wasn’t clear if anything helped survival.” However, over the past few decades the treatment options and results “have changed dramatically,” said the director of the James Thoracic Oncology Center. In this episode of the James Cancer Free World podcast, Carbone explains the advances made over the years: precision cancer medicine that targets specific mutations, and immunotherapy drugs that “turn on” the body’s own immune system to detect and attack cancer cells that had previously been hiding. “The immune system now sees something it couldn’t see before,” Carbone said. Another promising area of research is cellular therapy in which immune cells are genetically modified to be more powerful “and then infused back into the patient.” Carbone said that new targets and therapies are being discovered in labs at the OSUCCC – James on a regular basis. “It’s important to convey to patients that there is now hope,” he said.
