Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen of Great Britain & Ireland

Just in time for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgeton Story - here is the real story of the iconic Queen! Queen Charlotte went from minor German country gentry to Queen Consort of Great Britain and Ireland. She and George III had a happy marriage and an astonishing 15 children. Charlotte stayed out of politics as her husband lost the American revolution, and she lost her dear friend, Marie Antoinette in the French revolution. Charlotte made numerous cultural contributions including introducing the Christmas tree to Britain and throwing the first debutante ball. In her later years she had to watch as her husband slipped into mental illness and her children struggled to produce a new generation of royals. Chinese Concubines who became Empresses

For thousands of years, Emperors of China had harems of dozens or even hundreds of wives. Emperors had the right to select concubines from among the teenage daughters of the nobility or the peasantry. During the Ming dynasty 5,000 beautiful woman were brought from around the country and lined up in front of the palace. They were narrowed down to just a handful who were admitted into the palace and had a chance of spending a night with the emperor. Inside the forbidden city, imperial wives had an intricate system of hierarchy. At the top was the Empress. She was usually chosen for her nobility and political connections. When the emperor died, she could claim the title Empress Dowager, and continue her influence through her son. Below her were consorts, then concubines and maids. The emperor alone had access to all of them, and they were closely guarded by eunuchs. If the Emperor favored a particular concubine for her beauty, brains, or for baring him a son, he had the right to promote her, even to the rank of Empress. The Plantagenet Queens consort were: Berengaria of Navarre Isabella of Angoulême Eleanor of Provence Eleanor of Castile Margaret of France Isabella of France Philippa of Hainault The lives of the many Kings and handful of Queens Regnant who have held dominion over the kingdom of England, and later the United Kingdom take center stage in history. Time, it marches on relentlessly outside of human control. But humanity has long found a variety of ways to mark our passage through the eons. Seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years. But why do we count our collective journey through the ages in these integers? A day makes sense, that’s one rotation of the earth on its axis and can easily be marked by the rising and setting of the sun. And a year is one orbit of the earth around the sun, traveling through the 4 seasons again and again. But why 60 seconds in a minute, 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week and 12 months in a year? Successions of the 10 Modern European Monarchies

Royalty 101: Ten hereditary monarchies survive in Europe today; Belgium, Denmark, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, The United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein and Monaco. Each of them pass their thrones within their respective royal or noble family based on different rules. Some give daughters equal right to sons, some bar women and their children entirely. Princes and Princesses may be born into or removed from the line based their religion, if they are raised in the country, who they marry and other factors. Some monarchies have tight laws and successions lines only 10 to 20 people long. While others have lines which include thousands of extended relatives. Let’s take a look at who is and is not in line for the thrones of each of the 10 modern European monarchies. Royal Christmas in Germany, 1907 - German Holiday Traditions

In Germany, Christmas really glitters! In fact many of the traditions we associate with the festive season in Britain, the US and around the world come to us via Germany. The Christmas Tree, Santa Claus, Advent Calendars, nutcrackers, toys, Christmas Markets and a cornucopia of Christmas confections had roots in Deutschland. Much of this cultural exchange comes from the tight familial bonds between the British and German royal families. So curl up by the Tannenbaum with a plate of Weihnachtsplätzchen (Christmas cookies), and a mug of Glühwein or Kinderpunsch (mulled wine with or without the alcohol).
