Laith Ashley: PC is Doing Us a Disservice

TS Madison is joined by actor, model, songwriter, music producer, trans icon, (and Miss Mary’s celebrity crush), Laith Ashley! On “Outlaws,” we want to open up a space for guests to break their identity and discuss the big issues in the LGBTQ+ community. With a background in social work for queer youth and too many “first trans man to–” labels to count (not to mention, a Taylor Swift music video appearance), Laith is the perfect guest to get into the trans experience. Laith opens up about his early experiences with gender nonconformity, messaging around not being “feminine” enough, and eventually growing into his identity as a trans man. He and Maddie discuss their respective experiences being trans entertainers in the spotlight– including the lessons they’ve learned both from within and outside of the community. Also: The fluidity of labels; why Laith identifies as “Afro-Caribbean” rather than “Latino”; T4T relationships; how anti-intellectualism and transphobia feed off of each other; the importance of sexual health education; and a brief interlude on the US’s imperial history. Remembering Lynn Conway, Tech Visionary that Transphobia Almost Erased

It’s Pride Month, which is a great time to be thinking about the LGBTQ people who have been beacons of the vastness of what is possible for our communities. In this episode, Bridget highlights the incredible achievements of Lynn Conway, a trans woman who invented a lot of the tech we take for granted today. Despite a successful track record at IBM, her contributions were credited to others for almost 50 years until IBM formally apologized and recognized her in 2020. She was a bad ass innovator, and a pioneer for trans people trying to navigate a hostile world.
